Chapter 222

Chapter 222

“I’ll send him a good night text. He might be in a meeting or already asleep.” To soothe her daughter and get her to bed, Kaia had to compromise.

“Okay, but I want to watch you send it.” Brynlee leaned over, keeping her eyes glued to the phone screen.

With stiff fingers, Kaia typed out the words “Good night” and hit send.

A few seconds later, Finnian replied with two words: “Good night.”

Kaia stared at the screen, surprised that the man had actually played along. She showed the phone to Brynlee. “Your dad replied. Can you go to sleep now?”

“Are you sure you guys aren’t fighting? I still think you’re both acting weird, like you don’t want to talk to each other.” Brynlee blinked, firmly believing her own intuition.

“Alright, stop overthinking it. If you don’t get enough sleep, you won’t grow tall,” Kaia coaxed gently.

Brynlee finally relaxed, drifting off to sleep under her mother’s soothing touch.

On the morning of May 3rd, Finnian happened to return from his business trip. Around noon, Kaia received a text from him: “The Imperial Chef, seven o’clock. Let’s have dinner.”

Kaia frowned. “I’m busy.”

Finnian’s next message came through: “Brynlee knows today is our anniversary. When I took her to school the other morning, she brought it up. I told her we would be having dinner together tonight.”

Kaia paused. Finnian was actually bringing this up? How childish of him.

“Understood,” Kaia finally agreed.

Finnian sent another text: “Could you prepare a gift for me? I will have one prepared as well.”

Kaia truly felt he was asking for too much, but she knew he was only doing it to keep their daughter from getting suspicious.

“Fine,” she replied.

At ten minutes to seven, Kaia arrived promptly at the entrance of The Imperial Chef. Finnian had picked Brynlee up earlier, and the father and daughter were already sitting in a booth in the main dining room. They were chatting about something, and the little girl looked thrilled.

Kaia gripped the handle of her gift bag and walked briskly toward them. “Mom’s here!” Brynlee’s sharp eyes spotted Kaia instantly. She ran over happily and hugged her. “Mom, Dad and I have been waiting for you for so long!”

“I’m sorry, traffic was a bit heavy,” Kaia said warmly.

As she approached, Kaia saw Finnian leaning lazily back in his chair. He was wearing a dark gray dress shirt, looking effortlessly relaxed.

Brynlee had specifically changed into a pretty little dress for the occasion, her hair tied in a ponytail and decorated with two small hair clips.

“You made it.” Finnian looked up, his tone gentle and laced with a smile. “Brynlee and I have already studied the menu and decided what to eat. Do you want to add a couple of dishes?”

“No need,” Kaia said flatly. “Whatever you decided is fine.”

She sat down, and Brynlee snuggled into the same booth seat next to her. The restaurant was romantic and quiet, with the faint hum of the city’s hustle bleeding in through the windows.

Brynlee leaned happily against Kaia, looking out at the view and cheerfully sharing funny stories from school. Then, she pulled a drawing

out of her small backpack. “Dad, Mom, look at my new drawing. This is my gift to you guys.”

Kaia and Finnian each received a drawing from their daughter, and both were momentarily stunned when they looked at them.

Kaia received a rather abstract, cubist rendition of Finnian, while Finnian was handed a drawing of Kaia with wavy hair and high heels.

“I drew both of you! What do you think? Does it look like you?” Brynlee tilted her little head up, eagerly seeking praise.

“You definitely captured the essence,” Finnian praised with a smile.

Kaia carefully folded her daughter’s drawing and placed it in her purse. “You’ve improved again, Brynlee. This is wonderful.”

Finnian cut Brynlee’s steak into small, bite-sized pieces for her.

Kaia watched quietly, a complicated swirl of emotions rising in her chest.

Finnian really was a good father. He was incredibly patient and attentive with Brynlee. Watching the familiar ease with which he cut the steak, she remembered that it was something he used to do all the time.

Kaia suppressed her thoughts, refusing to let her mind wander any

Kaia reached out and patted her daughter’s head. The little girl was testing the waters again. She really couldn’t win against her.

Finnian took his fork, speared a piece of steak, and held it out to Kaia. “Eat up. I just cut it.”

Kaia had no choice but to play along, opening her mouth to take the bite, secretly hoping her daughter was done putting her to the test.

By now, all the dishes had been served, and the night view outside the window looked even more beautiful.

“Finnian, Kaia. What a coincidence.”

Just then, a voice laced with a smile drifted over. They both looked up to

see Silas Sanders standing near the room divider.
