Chapter 240
Chapter 240
Noelle couldn’t bear to listen anymore. Things were slipping completely out of her control.
She stared at Finnian. She had known him since she was nine years old. She thought she understood exactly how his mind worked, but now, sheer panic set in.
He was defending Kaia with absolute conviction.
There was no hesitation or performative duty in his expression-only deep respect and admiration.
Noelle gripped her glass so tightly her knuckles turned white. For the first time, she realized Finnian’s feelings for Kaia might be far deeper than she had ever imagined.
Was this miserable understudy finally getting a taste of victory?
Dinner eventually ended. Kaia didn’t bother responding to Elaine’s passive-aggressive remarks. As she stood up to leave, she simply said, “Mom, I’m taking Brynlee home now.
“Bye, Grandma! Mom, can Dad ride with us too? Dexter took the day off, so Dad has to drive all by himself,” Brynlee pleaded, tugging on Kaia’s finger.
Finnian stood perfectly still, waiting. But the word “okay” never came. “Let’s just head back. I want to take you somewhere else to look around first,” Kaia said smoothly, causing Finnian’s jaw to clench tight.
“Alright. I’m meeting a friend anyway, so I’ll get going too,” Finnian said, standing up. Noelle immediately asked, “Are you meeting Julian?”
Finnian shook his head. “No. Business associate.”
“Oh!” Noelle dropped the subject, not offering to walk him out.

Finnian escorted Kaia and Brynlee to their car. As the taillights disappeared into the night, his face was locked in a grim expression. It seemed that no matter how much space he gave her, Kaia was dead set on walking away.
Back inside, Noelle stared at her teacup, laughing bitterly to herself. What game are you playing now, Kaia? Hard to get?
Sometimes distance didn’t make the heart grow fonder-it just created permanent fractures.
On the drive home, Kaia gently and carefully explained her move to her daughter. Brynlee was ecstatic the entire way, declaring that she wanted to sleep over at the new house and pick out her own bed and lamps. Hearing her daughter’s joyful laughter, Kaia’s heart broke, and hot tears pricked her eyes.
If Brynlee knew this was the first step toward a permanent divorce, would she still be this naive and happy? If she knew her parents would never live under the same roof again, would she cry?
To expedite the move, Kaia decided to go furniture shopping on Sunday.
Silas had recommended an ultra-high-end furniture gallery. First thing in the morning, Kaia brought Brynlee and her mother, Jane, along.
They browsed the massive showroom, discussing options while Brynlee fluttered around them like a happy little bird.

As the camera panned over, it caught Silas casually sitting up on a luxurious mattress, patting the sheets while Kaia and Jane stood closely beside him, looking on. Finnian’s expression froze in an instant.
