Wendy scoffed internally. These pathetic gossips really had no filter, daring to run their mouths about anyone.
Mr. Sanders only used Kaia’s award to generate positive PR. Did they honestly think it was some grand display of true love?
Clutching a stack of documents, Wendy knocked on Noelle’s office door.
Noelle was standing by the floor–to–ceiling window, her arms crossed. Seeing Wendy enter, she immediately smoothed away the flash of irritation on her face,
“What are the people out there whispering about now?” Noelle asked.
Now officially working for Noelle, Wendy was a fiercely loyal disciple in her camp. As a result, Noelle spoke to her quite casually.
“Ms. Lawrence, have you been hearing the absolute garbage they’re spewing out there? Please don’t let it get to you. These people just hate seeing others succeed. They bend whichever way the wind blows. If I catch them talking trash again, I’ll tear their mouths off,” Wendy reported eagerly.
A contemptuous laugh slipped from Noelle’s throat. “They’re just dying to see me become a laughingstock. But I don’t care. I know exactly why he went to support her, and it definitely had nothing to do with Kaia.”
“Of course it wasn’t about her! Dr. Chavez has won plenty of awards over the years, and Mr. Sanders never bothered to show up back then–and they looked like they had a much better relationship back then than they do now,” Wendy quickly agreed.
Yet a flicker of confusion and deep–seated insecurity passed through Noelle’s eyes. “Then why do you think he went this time?”
“It’s just for show, Ms. Lawrence. Anyone with eyes can see he has no feelings for her. Don’t overthink it,” Wendy walked over, her voice softening in comfort.
Noelle nodded. “Send out an internal memo across Aethelstan. State that spreading baseless rumors that damage company morale and trust is strictly prohibited. Then, post a public message congratulating Kaia on her awards, and share those media articles while you’re at it.”
“But Ms. Lawrence… why give her the satisfaction?” Wendy felt a pang of sympathy, feeling like her boss was intentionally twisting the knife in her own heart.
“I have to do this.” Noelle closed her eyes, offering no further explanation. Just do exactly
Though reluctant Wendy believed Noelle’s decisions were always calculated and brilliant.
Chapter 278
Once Wendy left, Noelle sank into her chair and closed her eyes.
Of course she didn’t want to hand Kaia any kind of victory, but she couldn’t afford to be arrogant right now.
If rumors of her throwing a tantrum reached Grandmother Josephine’s ears, there would be hell to pay.
That old woman rarely left her estate and supposedly stayed out of corporate affairs, but her mind was as sharp as ever. She had completely seen through Noelle’s ambitions.
The humiliating press conference the Matriarch had forced her to hold was the greatest stain on Noelle’s otherwise flawless life.
She would carry that burning humiliation forever, treating it as a harsh lesson.
As long as that old hag was still breathing, Noelle had to tread incredibly carefully and ensure she never crossed her again.
Opening her eyes, a calculating gleam flickered in Noelle’s gaze. In truth, she knew why Finnian hadn’t attended her ceremony. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to–it was to avoid unnecessary trouble. His absence was actually a way to protect her and the delicate balance of their relationship.
His silent approval of her taking the group award was already the ultimate proof of his favoritism. Did it really matter what the public said?
Not at all.
Friday arrived right after the awards. Kaia was working her shift at the Holistic Wellness Center. The clinic was packed with patients. Dexter had picked Brynlee up from school and brought her straight to the center, as the little girl had thrown a tantrum demanding to see her mother.
Dexter dropped Brynlee off and left immediately.
As dusk approached, Kaia only had three appointments left before she could call it a day.
Just then, her phone rang.
A warm, elegant voice came through the speaker. “Dr. Chavez, this is Simon Quinn’s mother. My mother–in–law has been suffering from a terrible headache all day. We were hoping you might be available to make a house call. Would that be alright?”
Kaia paused in surprise.
She hadn’t expected an invitation from Mrs. Quinn.
Ever since her grandmother passed away, she had rarely accepted private house calls, usually requesting patients to visit her at the clinic.
During her brief hesitation, Mrs. Quinn sighed gently, “If it’s inconvenient…”
