Chapter 284

Kaia listened intently, analyzing the samples as they walked deeper into the heart of the massive.

warehouse

It was the dead of summer, the heat blistering and everything bone dry. Right as Kaia was negotiating with the manager, someone suddenly screamed, “Fire! The back warehouse is on fire!”

Before anyone could fully process the warning, thick, black smoke began pouring through the rear

doors

“Dr. Chavez, run!” someone yelled, shoving her toward safety.

Pure survival instinct took over. Kaia sprinted toward the exit, but the aisles were crammed with towering pallets of herbs. The smoke billowed in at terrifying speed, instantly choking the air and making it agonizing to breathe.

Kaia had only one thought: get out alive.

Suddenly, in the chaotic crush of panicked bodies, someone violently shoved her from behind. She crashed hard into a metal shelving unit. A sharp jolt of pain shot through her leg and lower back.

Someone grabbed her arm and dragged her toward the exit.

By the time they burst through the warehouse doors into the fresh air, Kaia’s legs gave out completely. The sheer terror of nearly dying left her trembling and weak. Several others collapsed onto the pavement around her, equally traumatized.

A crew scrambled to fight the blaze, slamming the warehouse fire doors shut. The wail of approaching fire engines echoed in the distance.

Someone rushed over to check on her. Kaia pulled up the hem of her slacks and looked down. Her thigh was bleeding from a nasty gash-not fatal, but extremely painful.

“Dr. Chavez, you’re hurt! We need to get you to a hospital right now,” her team urged, hovering around her anxiously.

Kaia nodded, letting her staff help her into a car. As they drove away, she looked back. The factory managers looked ready to break down in tears.

The smoke was thick and suffocating, threatening to blot out the sky, but thankfully, the fire engines had already arrived.

Kaia was rushed to the nearest emergency room. The hospital was chaotic, packed with injured workers fleeing the fire, all waiting for urgent care.

She sat on a temporary bed, waiting her turn.

Inspecting her wounds, she realized her leg would likely need stitches, while the scrape on her arm just needed basic bandaging. But her lower back-where she had slammed into the shelf-ached terribly. She would need an ultrasound to make sure there was no internal damage.

After her tests were done, Kaia was finally moved to a proper hospital bed. Her leg required five stitches. Thankfully, the ultrasound showed no serious damage to her spine, but the deep bruise on her back meant she needed strict bed rest for days.

Staring up at the ceiling, Kaia let out a heavy sigh. What an absolute nightmare.
