Chapter 289
Noelle pouted slightly, pretending to be annoyed, but turned to Martin anyway “Mr. Phodes please excuse me for a moment”
With that, she followed Finnian out toward the deck, his bodyguards trailing at a discreet distance
The ocean wind whipped around them as Finnian stopped and turned, glaring at her disapprovingly “Why was your phone off? Mrs. Wagner couldn’t find you and had to call me in a panic
Noelle blinked innocently, then giggled. “I just wanted to take a break from everything Mrs. Wagner is just a worrier. But… if you couldn’t find me, would you be worried?”
Finnian’s handsome face turned dead serious. “Noelle, never joke about your safety
game.*
Noelle took a sip of water, tilting her head. The wind wildly tossed her long hair, but she ignored t staring stubbornly into his eyes. “You didn’t answer my question. If I disappeared, would you worry about me?*
Finnian looked into her eyes, feeling utterly helpless.
“I’m not answering childish questions. Don’t ever pull a stunt like this again. You’re terrorizing the people who care about you,” Finnian scolded sternly.
Noelle smiled softly, completely appeased, like a spoiled child who had finally gotten her candy. She nodded obediently. “Okay, I know, I won’t do it again.”
Satisfied with her compliance, Finnian let the issue drop and moved to what was really bothering him. “Since when are you so close to Martin Rhodes?”
Noelle stiffened for a fraction of a second before answering defensively. “We’ve known each other for a long time. We’re just hanging out as friends. Are you going to micromanage that too?”
“He’s not a good man. Keep your distance from him,” Finnian warned her sharply.
“Oh? Sounds like you know him well.” Noelle blinked, looking highly amused.
“I’ve heard things. He had a fiancée recently. I don’t know the exact details of why they broke up, but a guy like him isn’t right for you.” Finnian’s tone was dead serious, he wasn’t playing around.
“I had no idea. We’re genuinely just friends. But to be honest, he’s been aggressively pursuing me for the last six months, sending me endless gifts,” Noelle said with wide, innocent eyes. ‘But if you think he’s bad news, I’ll keep him strictly in the friend zone. I won’t let it go any further.”
“Good. Keep your eyes open. Don’t let yourself get hurt,” Finnian ordered before turning and walking back toward the banquet hall.
Noelle frowned slightly, watching his retreating back.
He dragged her all the way out here just to say that?
She stomped her foot in frustration. He was so incredibly dense. Couldn’t he at least act a little jealous?
Chapter 289
Still, a deep satisfaction settled over her. That empty, aching hole in her chest finally felt full.
He didn’t have to say the words out loud; his actions were proof enough.
Walking back into the hall, Finnian immediately spotted Chad and Quentin. They looked shocked to see him there.
Chad, in particular, marched right up to him with a drink in hand, his expression pure disbelief. “Finnian, what the hell are you doing here? Kaia was literally just caught in a massive factory fire! It’s all over the news. You’re her husband-you should be at the hospital with her right now! She must be terrified.”
Quentin shot Chad a sharp, warning glare, silently telling him to shut up.
Chad caught the look, followed Quentin’s gaze to Noelle standing nearby, and immediately swallowed the rest of his words, snapping his mouth shut.
Finnian didn’t lash out. He simply replied in a cold, even tone, “Kaia has people taking care of her. She doesn’t need my help.”
The memory of her coldly rejecting him when he tried to put ointment on her back earlier that afternoon flared in his mind, leaving a bitter, infuriating taste in his mouth.
Noelle elegantly glided over to greet them. Chad and Quentin clearly sensed the unspoken tension and kept their mouths shut.
Years ago, before Finnian married Kaia, everyone in their elite circle had assumed Noelle was destined to be his wife.
But fate had played a cruel joke. Somehow, Noelle ended up marrying Rafael, becoming Finnian’s sister-in-law. It was only after that tragedy that Finnian settled for Kaia, another woman from the scientific field. To everyone watching, it felt like Kaia was simply a perfect, destined replacement. Their entire social circle knew the messy truth, and many found it tragically pitiful. In the end, it seemed no one had actually found happiness. They were all just chained by fate, dragging themselves into the future.
Noelle was quickly pulled away by a group of socialites, leaving Finnian surrounded by business elites.
Around eight-thirty, Brynlee initiated a video call.
Seeing his daughter’s name, Finnian stepped away from the crowd into a quiet corner to answer.
Looking at her on the screen, Finnian realized that from certain angles, her features perfectly mirrored Kaia’s. He had never seen photos of Kaia as a child, but he imagined she must have looked exactly like this.
“Dad, where are you? Mom said she has to work really late tonight, so she’s not sleeping at Grandpa’s house,” Brynlee said, her tiny voice laced with disappointment.
Finnian instinctively angled his phone away from the window, hiding the vast, dark ocean behind him.
“Dad has a business dinner tonight, sweetie. Be a good girl, listen to Grandpa and Grandma, and go to sleep early.”
