Chapter 294
The implication hung heavy in the air.
Kaia lowered her gaze, stirring her oatmeal, knowing they were both upset on her behalf.
“He came by last night,” Kaia added softly. “But he had to leave for something.”
Miles stared at her, his eyes locking onto hers for two long seconds before he decided not to rub salt in the wound.
After sitting for a while, Silas took a business call. Before leaving, he told Kaja, “I have an emergency at the office. I’m going to head over. Get some rest.”
Kaia nodded, watching him walk out.
Only Kaia and Miles remained in the room.
Miles glanced out the window, showing no intention of leaving. He picked up her medical chart and flipped through it.
“Miles, I know things must be busy at the hospital. You don’t have to stay here with me. I’ve already
asked my assistant to handle the discharge paperwork at ten,” Kaia said gently.
“It’s fine,” Miles replied. “I just want to keep you company.”

Kaia looked at him, suddenly at a loss for words.
The Miles she remembered was a man of few words, but he was incredibly steady and responsible. And unlike Finnian, while both were quiet men, Miles actually matched his words with his actions.
“Kaia, after everything you’ve been through with him… do you ever regret it?” Miles asked, his back still turned to her. He seemed focused on the chart, but his entire body was tense as he forced the question out.

Kaia froze. Confronted with such a direct question out of nowhere, her Voice grew tight. “Miles, why are you asking this?”
“Because I want to know.” Miles hung the chart back at the foot of the bed and turned around, looking at her intently. “I want to know why you risked everything to marry him.”
Kaia was completely stunned.
The sunlight outside the window grew brighter, signaling the start of a new day.
Just then, Dexter pushed the door open. “Dr. Chavez, did your phone die? Mr. Sanders can’t get through to you.”
Dexter’s timely interruption shattered the thick tension in the room.
Miles closed his eyes briefly, turning to face Dexter. “Where is he? When is he coming?”
Taken aback by Miles’s interrogation, Dexter quickly answered, “Mr. Sanders probably won’t be able to make it until tonight.”
“Tonight?” Miles scoffed.
Dexter suddenly looked intensely uncomfortable on his boss’s behalf. It wasn’t that the boss didn’t want to come; he was stranded on a yacht that wouldn’t dock until eight in the evening.
“Miles, you should go ahead and head out. Thank you for coming to see me,” Kaia said quietly.
Miles stiffened for a moment before nodding. “Alright, I’ll take off then. Let me know if you need any help.”
Kaia nodded. Miles walked to the door, giving her one last worried glance before leaving.
Around nine, Finnian tried calling again. Kaia didn’t answer, so he called Dexter instead.

“Is Kaia awake?”
Dexter replied, “Yes, sir. Silas and Director Kendrick both brought breakfast earlier. Dr. Chavez is eating right now.”
Finnian fell silent on the other end for two long seconds before letting out an ‘Mm.’ Then he added, “Find a chance to tell her I’ll come see her later.”

stand by his side, Kaia had pushed herself relentlessly. Now, having finally made a name for herself in the scientific community, she should have been reaping the rewards of her hard work. Instead, she had been hit with a bucket of ice water that extinguished every last spark of hope.
“Kaia, if it hurts, just cry. Don’t hold it in,” Jane coaxed her gently. “You don’t have to be strong about everything. To me, you’re always my little girl.”
Kaia froze. The tough facade she had been desperately maintaining suddenly cracked. The tears welled up instantly.
“Mom, I’m fine. Really, I’m fine.” She tried so hard to maintain her calm, but the tears slipping down her cheeks betrayed her.
“I know, I know. You’ve always been so proud and resilient. You hate showing weakness. I know all of that. But you aren’t made of steel. You get sad, you get hurt. Cry it out. It’ll be better once you let it out.” Jane reached out and hugged her tightly, tears already streaming down her own face.
