Kala opened her mouth to speak, but another tear slipped down her cheek. She swiped it away with the back of her hand, but the crushing weight of sorrow inside her only seemed to swell,
In that single moment, it hit her. Every ounce of love and devotion she had poured into their marriage over the last seven years meant absolutely nothing to him.
Otherwise, why on earth would he ask such a question?
It was as if he believed her years of sacrifice and companionship were nothing more than a calculated transaction.
A visceral pain ripped through her. She wanted to scream, to break down and sob, but the tears dried up. Instead, she just stared at him with profound, soul–deep disappointment.
Met with that harrowing look, Finnian félt an uncomfortable twist in his gut. Her eyes were a dark well of grief and resentment.
“If you don’t want to say, forget I asked.” He offered a cynical half–smile, as if he had already figured out the punchline. “People don’t get married without a motive. Whether you were after the prestige or the money, I’d say you got exactly what you bargained for.”
“You’re right,” Kaia replied, her voice eerily quiet. “I was after the fame and the fortune, and I got everything I wanted. Thank you for the platform and the resources over the last seven years, Finnian. You were an excellent
boss.”
The words felt like two daggers plunging straight into Finnian’s chest. His eyes narrowed dangerously as he locked his gaze onto hers, completely motionless.
“An excellent boss, huh? I guess that translates to a terrible husband. Got it. Message received.” Though he claimed to accept it, his expression was

practically carved from ice.
Kaia kept her gaze glued to the floor, officially done catering to his bruised ego.
“I don’t know how other couples operate, but I’d say we functioned pretty well together over the last seven years, didn’t we?” He clearly hadn’t accepted it at all, pointlessly digging his heels in.
Kaia finally looked up, giving him a derisive scoff.
That scoff stung like a physical blow. His brows snapped together. “Am I wrong? We were great partners. We communicated, we strategized. Whether it was a household issue or a boardroom crisis, I always helped you sort it out…”
“Yes, you did a stellar job.” Kaia didn’t even let him finish before delivering the deadpan verdict.
Finnian felt as though she had literally slapped him across the face. He scrambled for a retort, but his brain had completely short–circuited.
“I guess I was never the kind of husband you were looking for from the very beginning. Were you just using me as a stand–in for Simon this entire time?” Driven by an irrational surge of anger and wounded pride, Finnian lashed out. He felt like a commodity–she wanted what he could provide, but not him. The hit to his masculinity was infuriating.
Kaia slowly turned her head, fixing him with an unsettling, silent stare. He was undeniably gorgeous–tall, athletic, impeccably dressed, and possessing a naturally magnetic charm. If she were meeting him for the first time, she would probably still be foolish enough to fall for him.
But now, none of that mattered. His appeal was completely lost on her.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Finnian shifted uncomfortably under her scrutiny, feeling as if he were a slab of meat being graded at a market.

Kaia chuckled dryly “Nothing. I was just thinking that Mr. Sanders is a bit different today.”
“Different how?” Finnian demanded, his chest tight.
“You suddenly learned how to speak your mind,” she quipped smoothly.
Finnian was rendered entirely speechless.
A breeze drifted through the sheer curtains, bathing the room in golden morning light. Perhaps she was just delirious with exhaustion, but the peaceful scene suddenly triggered a wave of postalgia, pulling her back to a serene morning from their early days together.
Finnian watched the shifting sunlight dance across Kaia’s skin. For a fleeting second, a look of tender vulnerability crossed her radiant face, but she blinked, and the icy resolve instantly locked back into place.
