Chapter 402

Hearing the distant chime of a clock, Finnian felt his heart pounding. Regret washed over him. Why did he ask that? This was definitely not the time or place.

Would she answer directly? Or would she dodge it again?

“I’m sorry, but I have no desire to discuss that with you,” Kaia replied, her face growing even colder before she turned on her heel and strode

toward the cars.

He stood frozen for a long moment before chasing after her.

The moonlight stretched her shadow across the pavement. Following her, he felt a strange sense of disorientation. He had never walked behind her before; they usually walked side by side, or she trailed behind him.

The shift in dynamic felt remarkably subtle yet profound.

Back at the hotel, Kaia swiped her keycard and went straight inside. Finnian lingered in the hallway, wanting to say something but ultimately remaining silent.

This trip was like a mirror, perfectly reflecting the fractured state of their relationship.

Any normal married couple traveling together would share a room. But she had insisted on her own, leaving his room right next door.

“Mr. Sanders, still awake?” A few executives passed by and greeted him.

He forced a smile. “Just about to turn in.”

Stepping into his room, a bitter taste filled his mouth. They had agreed to put on a show, but she clearly didn’t care about keeping up appearances anymore. What was the point of the Marital Separation Agreement?

He wasn’t usually petty, but in this instance, he felt she wasn’t playing by the rules.

Remembering the Cytogene executive’s compliment, he let out a dry taugh.

An exceptional woman by your side. But right now, there was no one beside him. They felt more like business partners.

Lying on his back, hands behind his head, he glanced at the clock. It was going to be a long night.

The morning mist hadn’t cleared when Kaia’s tearn arrived at Cytogene’s pharmaceutical plant. The Vice President and Dr. Klaus Richter were waiting at the entrance. After greetings, they launched into the day’s agenda.

The VP walked alongside Finnian, while Kaia walked ahead with Klaus, discussing a thick dossier.

The morning light caught her profile as she listened intently, giving her a radiant glow. Her clear eyes were filled with intelligence and

determination.

Standing a few feet away, Finnian was reminded of the first time he saw her. She had been presenting on stage-young, bright-eyed. He had attended the seminar with zero expectations until the girl in the white blouse stepped up. Intrigued, he had asked a deliberately difficult question, expecting her to blush and stammer. Instead, she paused for a mere two seconds before flawlessly dismantling his query.

Now, it seemed no one could challenge her technically anymore.

They approached a piece of machinery where a technician ran a simulation of a drug’s interaction with the human body. Kaia watched closely, her team scribbling notes behind her. She conversed in fluent English, drawing everyone’s attention like a magnet.

Silas stood right beside her, eager to learn.

As the CEO of the conglomerate, Finnian had long stepped away from the technical trenches. Even if he joined them, he wouldn’t understand the

jargon. All he could do was watch from the periphery.

He noticed her occasional smiles, the slight blush when her eyes met Klaus’s-yet her posture remained confident and poised.

The surrounding noise seemed to fade. Watching her conquer the professional world, he unexpectedly found himself missing the woman at home-the one who brewed him herbal tea, made hangover soup, and massaged his temples when he was exhausted.

“Mr. Sanders, let’s let them hash it out and grab a coffee upstairs,” the VP offered with a smile.

Finnian snapped out of his daze and nodded. “Sounds good.”

After the tour, Finnian hosted a lunch for both teams. The conversation revolved mostly around work. He watched Kaia sitting in the center of the table. Klaus, the handsome technical director in his early thirties, shared her aura of authority.

A heavy knot formed in Finnian’s chest. It worsened when Kaia blushed under Klaus’s intense, admiring gaze. Her luminous skin flushed beautifully, like a spring blossom.

Finnian excused himself to the restroom. On his way back, craving a cigarette, he headed toward The Smoking Area. There, he overheard voices speaking in Mandarin.

He didn’t pay attention until he realized they were discussing his and Kaia’s separate hotel rooms.

“So it’s true. Dr. Chavez and Mr. Sanders are getting a divorce.”
