Chapter 422

Chapter 422

“How long exactly?” By asking, Kaia was essentially agreeing. The agreement was already signed, so she wasn’t worried. The

conglomerate’s strategic moves were critical, and she knew that as someone holding high-yield company dividends, if this deal succeeded, the value of her shares would skyrocket too.

Hearing that she wasn’t refusing, Finnian’s tone relaxed slightly. “A month at most. Once the bidding is over, no matter the result, I’ll go with you immediately.”

Kaia considered it for a moment. “Alright. I’ll wait. We’ll finalize it in a

month.”

Finnian’s voice softened. “Thank you for understanding. I’d like to take you and Brynlee out for dinner tonight. Would that be alright?”

“I’m busy. Just pick up Brynlee yourself. Take her out to eat, let her have some fun, and drop her off around nine-thirty.” Kaia rejected him flat out; she had no desire to share a meal with him.

“Is the coordination with Cytogene that busy? You have to work late tonight?” Finnian asked.

“Yeah, it’s pretty packed. I’ll probably be working late,” Kaia replied

casually.

“Okay, I’ll pick Brynlee up and have her back before nine-thirty.” The moment Finnian finished his sentence, Kaia hung up.

The dial tone echoing in his ear left Finnian feeling a suffocating tightness in his chest. Outside, a steady autumn rain began to fall. The forecast called for a week of relentless rain and dropping temperatures.

Raindrops lashed against the glass, leaving streaks of water that instantly blurred the city skyline into a murky haze.

Finnian turned and sank back into his office chair. The final drafts of the

bidding proposal were spread across his desk. He had been studying

them intently just moments ago, planning to run through them one more time with his team.

But now, staring at the dense blocks of text, he only felt a restless irritation. He couldn’t absorb a single word.

Just then, his phone chimed with a text from his mother, Elaine Sanders.

It was a photo of a Pregnancy Test Report. The results clearly stated: early pregnancy, twins, normal fetal heartbeats.

Immediately following that, Elaine sent a voice message, her excitement palpable. “Finnian, did you see the report? Noelle went in for a checkup today. The doctor said both babies are perfectly healthy, and they both have heartbeats! I am just so thrilled!”

Listening to his mother’s words, Finnian’s expression went blank.

Suddenly, the urgent desire he used to have to care about this situation completely vanished.

He typed a reply. “Mom, take good care of Noelle. I’m a bit busy at the company right now.”

Elaine replied instantly. “I know, I know, focus on your work. I just wanted to share the good news. That girl Noelle always brings me such wonderful surprises. I haven’t loved her in vain.”

As Finnian listened to his mother gush over Noelle, several nagging questions surfaced in his mind.

The truth was, Noelle had lied to him about the pregnancy.

On the day of Rafael’s memorial service, she hadn’t been drinking at all. Yet she had lured him to the third floor and spouted all that nonsense. Later, she called to apologize, claiming she had been drunk and terrified, which made her say crazy things.

Finnian tapped his fingers lightly against his desk, the rhythmic sound echoing in the quiet office. Something he had always believed to be rock

solid was suddenly being shaken by an invisible hand.

The question was… why did Noelle say those things to him in the first place?

His grandmother was threatening to send her abroad, and she had been scared-that was human nature.

She wanted a Sanders heir to cement her legitimate place in the family. It could have been a desperate thought born of panic. But what about now? She had known perfectly well that she and Rafael had finalized their fertility plans three years ago. She could have had those embryos transferred at any time. Why did she come begging him for a child?

Finnian’s dark eyes narrowed sharply. Could it be… did Noelle harbor feelings for him that went beyond sibling affection? Was she after something else entirely?
