Chapter 43
Her marriage to Finnian had begun as a cold agreement, practically a joint business venture.
What Finnian gave her was always respect and consideration that had been carefully weighed and calculated.
Kaia seemed to finally understand why Noelle, even after losing her husband, could so easily command Finnian’s gentle gaze and unconditional favoritism.
She also realized that Noelle had always occupied that special place in Finnian’s heart. He had never given it up to anyone else.
“The person recording is a woman. Who is she?” Kaia tucked away every trace of her devastation, looking up at Silas with steady eyes.
“My sister,” Silas replied.
He had seen the instant Kaia’s face turned pale, and the sheer shock and emptiness in her eyes.
“Finnian might not have truly realized his feelings for her back then, or maybe he did, but Grandmother’s arrangement, and my older cousin Rafael going along with it, led to the outcome we have today.”
Kaia nodded. “I see.”
Silas’s gaze was sharp. “I didn’t show you this to hurt you. I just wanted you to see clearly what you’re up against.”
“Yeah. Thank you,” Kaia said, standing up slowly, her eyes calm and grateful. “I want to know more. Can you forward this video to me?”
“Sure.”
“Alright, I’m heading out.” With that, Kaia grabbed her bag and strode out the door.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand. Aethelstan had grown to what it was today largely because of the blood, sweat, and tears she had poured into it.
Now, Finnian had turned Aethelstan into a tool to satisfy Noelle’s ambitions. Did that mean that no matter how much effort and heart she put in, it was ultimately just another prop in his game of pleasing Noelle?
That short, twenty–second video had become the final catalyst.
It incinerated the very last lingering shadow of her identity as “Mrs. Sanders.”
Back in her car, Kaia slumped over the steering wheel. She no longer cared how Finnian planned to keep Noelle around, nor did she care how many more surprises he had lined up to win her favor.
Thoughts of Brynlee consumed her, and suddenly, she was drowning in unwanted flashbacks of her
pregnancy.
When she had joyfully placed the positive pregnancy test in front of Finnian, he had been silent for a long time. Then he picked up the slip, glanced at it, and said in a purely businesslike tone, “Since

you’re pregnant, we’ll keep it. The Sanders family needs an heir.”
Shortly after, he added, “I’ll arrange for the best hospital and doctors. Hand your current projects over to someone else for now. Your health is the top priority.”
Immersed in the joy of impending motherhood at the time, she hadn’t dug into the underlying meaning of his words.
Looking back now, it was pathetic.
He arranged everything flawlessly, considering every possibility, except he never once asked her, ‘How do you feel? What are your hopes for this child?‘
To him, the pregnancy was just another corporate issue to be efficiently managed.
Throughout the entire pregnancy, Finnian provided the best medical care, regularly checked in with the doctor about her and the baby’s status, and gave standard obligatory care. He showed very little personal anticipation.
When she suggested taking some maternity photos, he accompanied her. But when the
photographer asked him to kiss her swelling belly, he merely pressed his palm against it for a second before pulling away.
It wasn’t until Brynlee was born, until he saw that wrinkled little face and those innocent eyes, that a flicker of genuine emotion finally appeared in Finnian’s gaze.
Kaia gripped the steering wheel tightly until her strength gave out, and then she snapped back to reality.
At 4:00 PM sharp, Kaia arrived at the preschool gates to pick up her daughter.
But when the teacher saw her, she looked surprised and walked over. “Brynlee’s mom, her dad
already picked her up.”
“What?” Kaia’s face registered alarm. “What time did he get her?”
“A little past two.”
Kaia quickly thanked the teacher and got back in her car, where she saw a text message light up her phone.
It was a photo from Finnian.
“I took Brynlee to the amusement park. Want to grab dinner out tonight?”
