Whats She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 438

Chapter 438

Finnian drove Brynlee to Kaia’s apartment building. Under the warm glow of the streetlamps next to the flower beds, Kaia’s silhouette appeared near the ground-floor elevator.

Finnian stood by his car. Brynlee had fallen asleep against his shoulder, her small face flushed and peaceful.

Kaia walked over. In the soft light, she wore a simple set of loungewear, her long hair tied back loosely. She was entirely makeup-free and wearing soft white slippers that padded softly against the pavement.

As a cool breeze brushed past, sweeping a stray lock of hair across her cheek, she reached up and casually tucked it behind her ear.

“Hand her over,” Kaia said softly. Without any unnecessary small talk, she reached out to take her daughter.

Finnian’s dark eyes locked onto her as he gently transferred the sleeping girl into Kaia’s arms. The little one shifted uncomfortably for a second, but upon recognizing her mother’s familiar scent, she settled immediately, murmuring a sleepy “Mommy.”

Kaia leaned down and kissed her daughter’s soft cheek, a genuine, uncontrollable smile lifting the corners of her lips.

Then, she turned to walk away.

Seeing that she had nothing else to say to him, Finnian felt a sudden pang

of loss.

“Kaia!”

Thinking he had something important to add, Kaia stopped and looked back at him.

That simple, backward glance left Finnian entirely momentarily

breathless. Flustered, he merely blurted out, “Nothing. Just… get Brynlee

to bed early. Tomorrow is Saturday. Do you have any plans?”

Kaia saw no reason to hide it. “I’m taking her to the amusement park tomorrow. We promised Anna.”

Finnian’s handsome face instantly stiffened. A playdate with little Anna meant… she was essentially going on a date with Simon Quinn?

Without waiting for his response, Kaia turned and strode toward the elevator.

Just as the doors opened and she reached out to press the button, Brynlee suddenly woke up. The little girl lifted her head, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Seeing the elevator doors about to close on her father, she frantically waved her tiny hand. “Daddy! What are you doing standing out there? Hurry up and get in! The doors are closing!”

In that split second, something deep in Finnian’s chest pulled taut. His long legs carried him across the lobby in a flash, and he slipped through the closing doors just in time.

Kaia stared at him, utterly bewildered.

Finnian looked back at her with a highly complicated expression, his eyes silently pleading with her to let him stay the night, for their daughter’s

sake.

‘Mommy, I asked Daddy earlier, and he said he doesn’t have to work late tonight!” Brynlee beamed, her face lighting up with sheer joy. “Daddy, you haven’t moved your luggage over yet! Your clothes aren’t even in our new

home.”

A wave of bitter regret washed over Finnian. The pure innocence in his daughter’s eyes triggered a suffocating sadness in his chest. Things that adults understood were completely incomprehensible to a child.

Hearing her daughter’s words, Kaia’s heart ached as well.

“You can stay the night,” Kaia finally relented, unable to bear the thought of crushing her daughter’s sudden happiness.

Finnian nodded, his voice thick. “Thank you.”

Perhaps it was his imagination, but the fleeting softness Kaia had shown when she first came downstairs had completely vanished. She had

reverted back to her impenetrable, icy demeanor.

Was it entirely because of him?

When the elevator reached their floor, Brynlee threw her arms around Kaia’s neck and made silly faces at Finnian, earning a genuine chuckle from him.

As they stepped into the entryway, Layla looked up and beamed. “Mr. Sanders! Are you staying the night?”

Finnian nodded.

“Layla, could you help Brynlee with her bath?” Kaia asked softly.

“Of course. Come on, Brynlee, let’s go with Layla,” the older woman said warmly, ushering the little girl toward the bathroom.

Brynlee looked back at Finnian every other step, warning him in her sweetest voice, “Daddy, you’re not allowed to just disappear. You promised!”

Finnian froze, his gaze instinctively shifting to Kaia, a flash of guilt crossing his features.

Kaia had already deduced what was happening. Once her daughter disappeared into the bathroom and the door clicked shut, she turned and walked toward the far end of the balcony.

Watching her slender, rigid silhouette, Finnian followed her silently, coming to a halt just a few feet away.
