Since Noelle moved her office here, the space was even more expansive and brightly lit, offering a sweeping view of the city skyline through the windows.

Behind the curved desk was a bookshelf adorned with volumes and art

As Kaia walked in, Noelle was typing away on her computer. She waved a hand dismissively. “Have a seat, Kaia. Next time you need to see me, just walk right in. No need to go through my assistant.”

Kaia sat down across from her and placed the folder on the desk. Skipping the pleasantries, she cut straight to the chase. “I’m here regarding the ecological cultivation and traceability integration project for the herbal medicines.”

Noelle’s smile didn’t waver. She glanced at the file on the desk but didn’t bother to examine it. Instead, she leaned back in her chair. “That’s your area of expertise, Kaia, so of course I respect it. But investment risks require careful assessment. Aethelstan has a strict set of standard operating procedures. This isn’t just my personal opinion.”

“Besides, Mr. Vance’s company is small, and its ability to weather risks is weak. That’s just a fact.”

Kaia stared at her quietly, letting out a cold laugh in her mind.

Then, she picked up the file from the desk, her tone perfectly calm but razor–sharp. “I have no intention of interfering with Aethelstan’s investment decisions. But as the technology provider, I have a responsibility to ensure that evaluations are based on facts and professional judgment, not derailed by irrelevant outside factors.”

Noelle’s expression finally cracked. Her fingers twitched on the desk, and her smile grew noticeably rigid. “Dr. Chavez, you’re about to leave

Aethelstan. Do you really want to stir up this kind of drama before you go?”

The air in the office seemed to freeze as the two women stared each

other down across the massive desk.

Right then, the intercom on Noelle’s desk buzzed.

She snatched it up immediately. “Hello?”

Noelle shot a look at Kaia and said into the phone, “Understood. Please tell Mr. Sanders to wait a moment. I’ll be right there.”

Hanging up, Noelle turned back to Kaia, her smile now carrying an extra layer of hidden meaning. “Alright, Kaia, I hear you loud and clear. Aethelstan will reconsider the project. Finnian needs to speak with me, so I have to go.”

Noelle was temporarily backing down.

Kaia stood up and took her files back. “I look forward to Aethelstan’s fair and professional evaluation.”

As Kaia left Noelle’s office, she saw Finnian striding toward the elevators. His deep, unfathomable eyes locked onto her.

But Kaia looked right through him. She stepped aside to clear the path and walked straight to the opposite elevator bank.

Finnian froze. He turned, watching Kaia walk away, his throat tightening

as he swallowed hard.

It was now December. On the evening of December 3rd, Finnian sat in his office.

In front of him lay the minutes from an Aethelstan Capital investment committee meeting and a project review report.

The light hit the sharp angles of his face, casting half of it in shadow.

A week had passed since Kaia stormed into Noelle’s office to confront

her.

Kaia was usually low–key and accommodating. This kind of aggressive boundary–crossing was something she almost never did.

When Finnian heard about the incident, he immediately pulled all the files on Marcus Vance’s project, as well as Aethelstan’s two internal evaluation

reports.

With his years of cutthroat experience, he saw instantly that the freeze on the project was driven by non–commercial factors.

Finnian pinched the bridge of his nose. This situation had spiraled far beyond a simple business deal.

It was like a knife slicing open a harsh reality: Kaia was no longer

standing in his corner.

Because of this project, Kaia hadn’t hesitated to clash directly with her superior. The woman who was always praised for being understanding and looking at the big picture was now willing to blow things up. Others might not have the leverage, but given Kaia’s influence in the field, she absolutely possessed the potential to cause real damage.
