Chapter 495

Gordon walked in, set the flowers aside, and sat in the chair next to the bed

Dressed in a sharp, dark gray suit, he looked crisp and professional, as if he had just stepped out of a boardroom.

“Are you feeling any better?” he asked.

Noelle nodded. “Much better. You’ve been working hard at Aethelstan.”

Gordon offered a dedicated expression. “Just focus on resting. Don’t worry about anything else. Mr. Sanders will help out too.”

At the mention of Finnian, her eyes dimmed.

She had been in the hospital for nearly ten days, and Finnian had only called once-strictly for business. As for visiting, he hadn’t shown his face at all.

She was starting to wonder if he even considered her a patient anymore.

Silence settled over the room. Noelle looked down at the IV needle taped to the back of her hand. A tiny trace of blood seeped out, making her look incredibly fragile.

Gordon’s eyes reddened with heartache.

“Gordon, I know you care about me a lot,” Noelle finally spoke. “But… I don’t want you coming here anymore.”

He froze, looking up at her.

“I don’t want to cause any misunderstandings. Do you know what I mean?”

He nodded slowly. “I understand.”

Noelle relaxed. Gordon lingered for a few seconds before standing up. “Take care of yourself. I’ll head back to the office. If you need anything…”

“I won’t,” she said with a soft smile.

Gordon knew Noelle’s gaze would never land on him, yet he always harbored a sliver of hope.

That afternoon, Elaine came by, carrying an insulated thermos.

When she walked in, Noelle was scrolling through her phone. Seeing Elaine, she immediately set it aside and called out gently, “Mom!”

Elaine gave a brief acknowledgment and sat by the bed. “This is chicken soup. It’s a little hot right now. Let it cool, then have Martha give you a couple of bowls.”

“Thank you. Have you been busy lately?” Noelle had noticed Elaine was only visiting every other day now. She found it strange.

the past, even a minor ailment would have Elaine checking on her multiple times a day.

What went wrong?

Noelle racked her brain but couldn’t come up with an answer.

“I have things to do. I’ll get going. Rest well.” Elaine stood up, ready to leave.

“Mom, aren’t you going to stay a little longer?” Noelle’s voice carried a cautiousness she didn’t even notice, her eyes brimming with vulnerability.

Elaine glanced at her, then looked away. “If you need anything, have Martha do it. Grandmother hasn’t been sleeping well lately. I need to go home and check on her.”

With that, Elaine left. Noelle’s heart skipped a beat as a terrible premonition washed over her.

When Martha poured her the soup, Noelle immediately asked, “Martha, Mom seemed upset. Did something happen at home?”

Martha paused. “I’m guessing it’s because of the divorce. Everyone in the family knows about it.”

Noelle’s fingers tightened slightly.

Were they finally getting the papers signed?
