Whats She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 79

Finnian didn’t respond. He simply downed the rest of his drink in one go, turned on his heel, and walked away.

Miles approached them, flanked by several hospital directors.

Kaia, incredible job tonight.Miles’s gaze rested on Kaia’s stunning face, his eyes gleaming with genuine admiration.

You’re too kind, Miles. I’m hoping we can collaborate more in the future,Kaia said, never missing an opportunity to talk business.

Miles’s smile deepened, his voice earnest. Absolutely. I’m completely on board.

Hearing that, Kaia tapped her glass against his. Then I’ll be counting on you, Miles.

Anytime.Miles looked at the spot on the rim where her glass had touched his, then subtly brought it to his own lips and took a sip.

As the event drew to a close, Kaia was entirely exhausted. After saying goodbye to Celine, she found an empty VIP lounge and collapsed onto a sofa.

Silas walked in carrying a cup of warm tea. You look dead on your feet. Drink this, it’ll help you sober up.

Thanks. You’ve been running around all night, you’ve got to be more exhausted than I am,” Kaia said gratefully,

I’m fine.Silas’s smile didn’t waver. I really owe you tonight. If it wasn’t for your absolute technical dominance backing me up, getting these investors to actually care would have been a nightmare.

Kaia smiled. Your ability to read a room and pull people in is nothing to scoff at either.

As Silas spoke, he casually hopped up and sat on the edge of her coffee table. A second later, he let out a low laugh and leaned in, dropping his voice. You totally crushed a certain someone’s ego tonight. Did you see her face? It was a masterpiece.

Kaia paused before replying flatly, Don’t compare me to her.

Understood!Silas looked incredibly pleased. “She’s not even in your league.

You handle the wrapup here. I need to head home. Brynlee called me twice already,Kaia said, her tone softening.

Alright. The driver’s waiting out front. Get home safe. Don’t keep the kid waiting,Silas said with genuine concern.

Kaia stood up, said her final goodbyes, and made her way out the door. The driver the company had assigned her was already idling at the curb.

Kaía!

A tall, commanding figure approached from behind. Finnian had somehow followed her out.

Kaia turned to look at him as he spoke. Brynlee is throwing a bit of a fit. Let’s ride back together.

Where’s your car?Kaia frowned, having zero desire to share a ride with him.

*Dexter is still inside. He’s going to drive Noelle home. She drank,Finnian explained as he pulled open the back door of her car and slid right in.

Kaia stared at the open door in silence. Knowing her daughter was at home waiting for her, she didn’t have the energy to fight him over it.

She got in, immediately leaning her head against the window on her side and closing her eyes.

Finnian clearly wanted to say something, but seeing her looking so exhausted with her eyes shut, he hesitated. Whatever words he had prepared died in his throat.

They arrived back at the estate.

Sure enough, a tiny figure was sitting on the front porch steps. She was swimming in a massive men’s puffer jacket that swallowed her whole. She was wearing a beanie and holding a tiny camping lantern that gave off a weak, flickering light.

Amara was standing right next to her, continuously pleading with Brynlee to go wait inside the living

room.

But the little girl refused to budge, keeping her eyes glued to the driveway. Only when the headlights swept over her did she jump up happily, pointing at the incoming car. Amara! Mommy’s home!

Amara looked at the Mercedes. It was indeed Mrs. Sanders’s car.

The car pulled up to the door, and Finnian stepped out before Kaia.

Dad! Why are you in Mommy’s car?Brynlee was surprised, but a second later, she was scooped up into Finnian’s strong arms.

Brynlee, it’s freezing out here! Why are you sitting on the steps?Finnian couldn’t bring himself to be angry, but he was overwhelmed with worry. When was his daughter going to break this habit? Doing this in the summer was one thing, but the biting winter air was too much even for an adult.

Dad, I’m wearing your big coat! And I was sitting on top of the jacket part, so I wasn’t cold at all!Brynlee argued stubbornly, though her little face and hands were freezing.

Finnian wrapped his large, warm hands over hers. He turned back just as Kaia stepped out of the car.

Kaia reached out and pressed her hand against her daughter’s forehead to check her temperature. She then turned and thanked the driver, telling him to get some rest.

Dad, you drank alcohol again!Brynlee pressed her freezing hands against Finnian’s cheeks. Hmph. You never listen, Dad. You’re so annoying.”

Finnian laughed. Today was the grand opening of Mommy’s new company. Dad was happy, so I had a couple of drinks.

Really? Mommy, did Dad really drink because he was happy?Brynlee looked at Kaia, her eyes shining.

Kaia gave Finnian a cold look before taking her daughter from his arms. I’m taking Brynlee upstairs. Amara, you should go get some rest too.

Amara immediately nodded and hurried off.

Kaia carried Brynlee upstairs. Finnian stood in the living room for a moment before following them.

Brynlee was actually exhausted. Safely wrapped in her mother’s arms, she fell asleep midsentence. Kaia laid her gently on the bed and tucked her in.

Kaia was feeling slightly dizzy from the alcohol she’d had, so she decided to go downstairs and make some tea to sober up.

Just then, Finnian’s deep voice sounded from behind her. You aren’t wearing your wedding ring today.

Kaia was just about to take off her pearl earrings. Hearing him, she stopped.

She lifted her left hand and looked at the faint indentation on her ring finger.

Oh. I forgot.”
