Noelle turned and walked toward her friends, but internally, she was furious. Tonight was supposed to be her night. Kaia showing up uninvited had completely ruined her moment.
Her very presence was a thorn in Noelle’s side. Regardless of whether Kaia was standing next to Finnian or not, everyone in the room still viewed her as the rightful, undisputed Mrs.
Sanders.
Miles had naturally noticed Finnian and Noelle arrive, and he hadn’t missed the undeniable intimacy between them.
He turned his head to look at Kala. His deep gaze studied her face for a few seconds. She looked perfectly composed, but the fleeting flash of sadness in her eyes hadn’t escaped his
notice.
Miles glanced back at Finnian, a nearly imperceptible sneer tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Kaia’s clutch buzzed with an incoming message.
Feeling a little thirsty, she grabbed a glass of lemon water and turned to Miles. “I’m going to sit down for a minute. You guys keep talking.”
Watching her somewhat lonely figure walk away, Miles almost followed her, but he stopped himself. He knew that when people were hurting, they usually preferred to be alone.
Taking a seat on a plush sofa, Kaia pulled out her phone. The text was from Silas. It just said “3” with a video attached.
Her heart inexplicably sank, but her finger tapped play before she could stop herself.
The footage was shaky at first before coming into focus. The background looked like a high school auditorium.
The stage was beautifully decorated, bathed in warm lighting.
Under a spotlight, a young girl in a white ballet tutu was twirling and leaping across the stage. She moved like a graceful swan, every frame capturing her pure, vibrant energy.
Even through the grainy resolution of the old video, Kaia instantly recognized the teenage Noelle. She had an innocent, youthful smile that had long since faded.
Kaia looked up from her phone and spotted the real Noelle across the room, covering her mouth as she laughed, radiating polished sophistication and deep–seated ambition.
Kaia looked back down. The camera panned to the front row of the audience.
Two young men sat side–by–side in casual clothes, their eyes glued to the stage, occasionally leaning in to whisper to each other with appreciative smiles.

It was the Sanders brothers. On the left was the gentle, warm Rafael. On the right was Finnian, exuding the brash, arrogant confidence of a teenager.
As the dance ended, the breathless girl on stage gave a deep, elegant bow.
The crowd erupted into applause. Rafael was the first on his feet. Holding a massive bouquet of flowers, he strode up onto the stage and handed them to Noelle.
Noelle beamed, looking at him with absolute adoration as she took the flowers.
Finnian followed him onto the stage, but he didn’t bring flowers. Instead, he carried a beige women’s coat. While Noelle was still smiling at Rafael, Finnian stepped up and draped the coat over her bare shoulders. Noelle stepped back slightly and said something to him. Finnian laughed, a bright, genuine smile lighting up his face, and then looked down.
The video ended there.
Holding her phone, Kaia felt like she had been punched in the chest. A bone–deep exhaustion washed over her.
So it had started that early… the foundation of their twisted affection had been laid all those years ago.
Rafael had been the bold, direct pursuer.
And Finnian had been the quiet protector, always standing right behind his brother, watching her with a soft, careful gaze.
The scattered puzzle pieces Silas had sent her finally formed a clear picture of a shared history she had never been a part of.
“Kaia!” Miles walked over after giving her a few minutes of space. “That data modeling your mentioned earlier? I actually just heard about a case study that perfectly supports your theory.”
Kaia blinked, looking up at him gratefully. “Really? Tell me about it.”
Miles sat down naturally on the sofa beside her, and the two dove into a deep conversation.
om across the room, Finnian watched Kaia and Miles talking intently. His eyes darkened
h complex, unreadable emotions.
The second half of the gala transitioned into the charity auction.
Neither Kaia nor Miles were particularly interested in this segment, though several wealthy executives were eagerly bidding to show their support for medical research.
Suddenly, a massive image of an antique medical chest from a 19th–century imperial physician appeared on the screen, complete with several original, hand–bound medical texts. The auctioneer explained it had been donated by an old, prestigious family and was incredibly rare.
Seeing the chest, Miles suddenly remembered Kala had a similar one passed down from her grandmother that she treasured deeply.
“That’s a gorgeous piece. It would look incredible displayed in your office,” Miles smiled.
Hearing this, Kala focused on the screen.
She didn’t care about the chest, but she had never seen those three medical texts before.
“Miles, bid on it. I want to buy those three books,” Kaia said.
“Done. I’ll get it for you,” Miles nodded.
The starting price was high, jumping immediately to $800,000.
Not far away, Noelle leaned close to Finnian, whispering something in his ear. Finnian nodded slowly.
