When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 224

Nelly’s heart skipped a beat as she scrambled to her feet. The storage room was shrouded in darkness, with only a tiny window high up on the wall. She couldn’t see a thing outside.

Was she already in the underground city?

Gregory’s warning replayed in her mind. If she spent too much, she might get invited to the underground city as a guest. But there was another, much worse scenario... being forced in. People like that became part of the city, lost to the world, never coming back.

It was obvious now. She was one of those people.

“Brody, wake up. Come on, Brody, wake up.” Nelly grabbed Brody’s arm and shook him until he finally frowned, his eyes fluttering open. He looked dazed, his gaze unfocused. It took a few seconds before he finally seemed to recognize her.

He reached for her hand, holding on tight. “Nelly… are you alright?”

His voice was rough, his throat dry. Every muscle in his body ached, and his head felt heavy and slow.

“I’m okay. What about you? How are you feeling?”

Nelly couldn’t help worrying about Brody. He had a heart condition, and he’d always lived a cushy life. There was no way he could handle a place like this for long.

Brody shook his head and looked around. “What’s going on?”

He already knew something was wrong before he blacked out. Nelly hadn’t gone to the club just to have a good time. There was more she wasn’t telling him.

How many secrets did she have?

“I think we’re in the underground city.”

“The underground city?” Brody’s voice was low and steady.

He knew exactly how bad things were, but he never lost his cool. Brody was always logical, never ruled by emotion.

Right now, he was more interested in what Nelly was hiding. How had she gotten mixed up with a place like this?

“I have my own reasons. It has nothing to do with you. You followed me here, so if anything happens to you, it’s not my fault.”

Nelly glared at Brody’s calm, detached face. She knew this was on her, but his attitude still annoyed her.

“I came because I was worried about you. If something happens to me, then it’s all on you.”

Brody turned to look at her. The light in the room was dim, making it hard to read his expression.

His calm, matter-of-fact tone made Nelly want to scream.
