When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 61

Sheila found it pretty funny. “Brody, where are you even getting these ideas? How could Nelly possibly be the Watson family heiress?”

Brody didn’t say a word, which made Sheila think he was being even more ridiculous.

“If Nelly really was an heiress worth billions, why would she bother splitting assets in a divorce? Why wouldn’t she fight you for custody of Carrie? Would she really just leave her behind?”

Sheila made sense and deep down, he knew it. It just didn’t add up.

But he was sure about what he’d seen earlier. Nelly had been with a man. She was dressed up from head to toe in designer clothes, carrying a brand new bag that screamed luxury. She looked glamorous, almost unrecognizable. After they got married, she’d barely dressed up at all. He thought about the eighty million he’d given her and realized maybe it hadn’t gone to waste after all.

“Brody, please, just stop overthinking it. Nelly knows she can’t win your heart, that’s why she chose to leave. There’s no such thing as unconditional love. For Carrie, you need to sort this out sooner rather than later.” Sheila’s voice turned gentle, almost pleading.

She reached out, wanting to comfort him, but before she could wrap her arms around his waist, Brody stood up.

“I have things to do. Alan will drive you home,” he said.

Sheila barely had time to answer before Brody was already walking out the door.

Once outside, Brody couldn’t hold back anymore. He jumped in his car and headed straight for Lakeview Estate. Tonight, he was going to get to the bottom of why Nelly was so desperate for a divorce.

It just didn’t make sense. She’d spent her whole life looking only at him. She’d given him a child, and for years, her eyes were always full of love. Why would she suddenly want to end things?

He could forgive her mood swings, especially with her illness and the fact that he’d missed the anniversary of their son’s death. But lying to him? That was something he couldn’t accept.

Nelly had just slipped off her clothes, ready for a shower, when the doorbell rang. Jonah had just left, so she thought maybe he forgot something. She hurriedly put on her bathrobe and opened the door.

She wasn’t expecting Brody. He stormed in without a word, heading straight for the bedroom.

Nelly stared up at him, stunned. Brody’s usually dark, distant eyes now looked a little red. His lips trembled just a bit, and his voice came out soft, like he was barely holding back something fierce.

“Who is he?” he asked.

“What?” Nelly blinked, confused.

“I saw you,” Brody said quietly. “The man you were with. Is he the reason you want a divorce?”

Now it made sense. He must have seen her with Jonah. She had been with Jonah a lot lately, so she guessed someone might have seen them together.

She let out a small, amused laugh. “Seriously, Brody? If you keep this up, you’ll make me think you’re actually jealous.”
