Adrian suddenly realized that Wendy's behavior could only indicate one thing: she still cared about him.
Wendy stared at him as if he had lost his mind. We've been divorced for more than twenty years, not two. What makes him think I still care enough to be jealous over him?
Yes, she was angry.
She had already been angry on the way here, but her anger had nothing to do with the scene she had just walked in on.
"I..."
Wendy had barely opened her mouth when Adrian cut her off.
He seemed certain that she was upset because she still cared. In a hurry, he forced himself to explain with as much patience as he could manage.
"Wendy, there's really nothing going on between Pepper and me. She came over today to bring me soup, then accidentally burned herself. That's why she went into my lounge to put ointment on it.
"I only checked the burn because she's your sister and Gianna's mother. There's no way I'd ever get involved with your sister. Even if every woman in Oceaton vanished, I still wouldn't touch her."
Pepper had just stepped out of the lounge when those words hit her.
Even if every woman in Oceaton vanished, he still wouldn't touch me?
For a split second, the innocent, anxious look on her face almost cracked. Resentment flashed in her eyes. D*mn it. That wasn't how he acted in the lounge just now.
He was clearly starting to waver. If Wendy hadn't shown up out of nowhere and ruined everything, Adrian and I might already be in bed by now.
Wendy, this is all your fault.
You keep acting like there's nothing left between you and Adrian. You keep pretending you're above all this, yet the moment I finally get a real chance, you show up and destroy it.
Pepper quickly buried her hatred and hurried forward, her expression anxious. "Adrian, let me explain to Wendy."
"Yeah, explain it to her." Adrian looked as though he had grabbed a lifeline. He reached out and pulled Pepper closer.
The sudden tug made Pepper stumble, and she fell against him.
Before Adrian could push her away, she had already steadied herself.
"Wendy, I really did get burned. I was the one who asked Adrian to help me look at it. I..." Pepper rushed to explain, yet she looked nothing like an innocent victim at that moment.
Her hair was slightly messy. Every button on her blouse had been fastened, but the thin fabric still clung to her under the light, almost sheer. The silk did very little to hide her figure.
