Jarrett’s face was stone cold. In all their years, their family had never been this humiliated.
Worse yet, the whole disaster had played out right in front of their biggest rivals.
Could it get any more embarrassing?
“Albert, I have to be honest, I wasn’t on board with this marriage in the first place. The Brown family is really nothing special. You could have found someone who fits you better. And Layton is just too calculating.”
“Carola has always been known for being spoiled. But after this, I think it’s more than just being spoiled… I think it’s a real character flaw.” Jarrett let out a heavy sigh.
“But Grandpa, Albert already signed the papers with Carola. Is divorce even an option now?” Carmen couldn’t help stirring the pot.
Her mom reached over and pinched her thigh, hard. Carmen winced, biting her lip.
But when she caught her mother’s sharp stare, she clamped her mouth shut.
“Dad, I really think this must be a misunderstanding. We’ve known Carola since we were kids. She would never do something like this.”
Deep down, Albert just couldn’t believe the little girl who used to hide away in the attic was now the cold, heartless person he saw in that video.
He simply didn’t want to believe it.
Carmen muttered under her breath, “Why not? She used to love picking on Dorothea when we were little.”
“What did you just say?”
Sarah shot her a glare.
Carmen shrugged, “Nothing. Carola’s always been the sad, pitiful one, right? Other people bully her, she’d never bully anyone else. Is that what you want to hear?”
Albert pressed his lips together. He caught every bit of sarcasm in Carmen’s voice. He wanted to say something, but right then his father’s phone rang.

Layton was just as angry as Jarrett. “Elise, what kind of job did you do raising Dorothea? I never treated her badly, and this is how she pays Carola back?”
Alonzo had been fed up with Dorothea for ages. “Mom, I told you Dorothea’s ungrateful. You always take her side. Honestly, you should have stopped looking after her the moment she turned eighteen. Now she’s ruined Carola’s wedding. I’d love to teach her a lesson.”
Layton shot him a warning look. “Don’t say such things.”
Dorothea had people backing her now. Not just Alonzo, even the whole Clark family couldn’t afford to cross Latham.
Alonzo scowled, realizing this wasn’t the time to pick a fight with Dorothea.
He didn’t feel the slightest bit of brotherly love for Carola. All he felt toward her was pure, deep-seated disgust.
