She stood up, slipped on her trench coat, and shut down her computer with a quick tap. A few colleagues were still lingering around and couldn't hide their surprise at the sudden appearance of the handsome guy in the office. Even as Mamie and Scott walked out together, whispers followed them from behind.
"Wow, Mamie's husband is so good-looking."
"It makes sense, beautiful people end up together. My eyes are pretty happy right now."
Mamie’s whole body tensed. She didn’t dare look back or even glance at the man beside her. Her ears felt like they were on fire, so she sped up, hoping to escape as quickly as possible. The elevator dinged open just in time.
As Mamie stepped inside, she paused for a moment. Scott leaned closer, his voice a soft comfort. "Don’t worry, I’m right here." Those four words, gentle but certain, melted away the knot in her chest.
Something about Mamie seemed different today, Scott noticed. He wasn’t sure if it was just because of what she’d been through that morning or if something else had changed.
Without even realizing it, Mamie stood on Scott’s left side and reached up to tug at her hot earlobe. Scott went still for a second. She probably didn’t even realize, but ever since she lost her memory, she’d always stood on people’s right. Before that, before the accident, she always walked on his left.
Scott’s expression gave nothing away as he pressed the button for B2.
"Mamie, did the building staff tell you what happened with the elevator today?"
Mamie blinked, taken off guard by his sudden question. It took her a second to answer. "They said a stray cat tripped a breaker or something, but I didn’t really ask for details. I’ll have them step up the maintenance tomorrow."
Scott nodded. A stray cat? That made no sense. What were the odds a random cat could just trigger the elevator and at exactly the wrong time?

Back at home, Garth couldn’t concentrate on anything. He kept glancing at the clock, looking restless.
"Grandpa, do you think Mom and Dad went out on a secret date without me?" he asked, feeling a little betrayed. Why didn’t they take him along? It must have been Dad’s idea. If it were up to Mom, she’d definitely want him there too.
Ladd couldn’t help but smile at that. "Garth, if your dad hears you say that, he’ll be sad, you know."
Mamie rushed to explain. "No, Garth, don’t blame your dad. I just got something in my eye, that’s all. Your dad would never do anything to hurt me."
Garth wasn’t convinced. He shot his dad a dirty look. "Really?"
"Mom, if Dad ever bullies you, you have to tell me," he said, dead serious.
Ladd called everyone into the dining room for dinner. Garth, off school for three days, piped up with his own plan. "Mom, can we go to Hawaii?"
Mamie’s breath caught for a second. She still remembered how she’d gotten pregnant with him that night in Hawaii.
Without thinking, she replied, "Your dad and I have already been to Hawaii. How about we go to Eldoria? It’s warm there too, and right on the ocean."
Scott’s eyes darkened. How did she know they’d been to Hawaii? That could only mean one thing. She had gotten all her memories back.
