When Dorothea came home this time, she could instantly tell that something had changed between Mamie and Scott. Their relationship seemed to have jumped ahead overnight. Scott, who was usually all about keeping things proper and polite, spent the entire dinner stuck on Mamie. His attention never strayed, not for a second.
Mamie clearly didn’t know what to do with all that focus. She shot Scott a glare, trying to warn him off, but he just kept staring at her like he hadn’t even noticed.
After dinner, Scott announced, “Dad, I’m planning to take Mamie to get new wedding photos next week.”
Last time, the pictures came out rushed and awkward. This time, Scott wanted their son to come too—turning the shoot into a real family portrait. He looked over to his dad. “If you’re not busy, you should join us. Might as well get a full family photo while we’re at it.”
Ladd looked thrilled. “That sounds great.”
Latham piped up, leaning in with a grin. “Wait, you’re only bringing Dad? Not your little brother?”
He gave Dorothea a meaningful look. “My wife and I are planning a maternity shoot anyway. Let’s all go together.”
Being a soon-to-be dad made you look for deals wherever possible.
Scott shot Latham a look, not exactly impressed. “Fine. The more the merrier, I guess.”
Latham immediately winked at his wife, looking ridiculously pleased with himself. Dorothea couldn’t help but laugh, rolling her eyes.
She didn’t say anything, though. What could she say? Saving money was saving money.
Once everyone locked down the date, they all went together. Dorothea wasn’t shy—she brought Grandma Pauline along, too.
Dorothea was just three months pregnant. She barely had a baby bump, so she could have easily waited for photos, but Latham insisted on doubling up with Scott’s session.
He nudged her, whispering, “When you’re seven months along, we’ll just do another shoot.”
Dorothea could only sigh and agree.
On the day of the photos, Garth was super hyped. He’d spent a whole week barely touching dinner, just to look good in front of the camera.
He tugged on Mamie’s sleeve. “Mom, does this white suit make me look fat?”
Honestly, Dorothea had to admit, she’d never seen Scott so head-over-heels. It was obvious to everyone—he was crazy about Mamie.
After their couple photos, Mamie called Garth over for family shots. With him out of the way, it finally got a bit quieter.
Dorothea sat beside her grandmother and leaned in, whispering as they talked.
Grandma Pauline smiled softly. “Dorothea, this is amazing. I just hope I live to see your kids come into the world.”
Dorothea’s heart squeezed tight. “Grandma, of course you will.”
Pauline squeezed her hand, a little sad. She’d been feeling weaker lately, so moments like this hit harder.
She hesitated before adding, “Your mother came to see me a few days ago. After the divorce from Layton, her health isn’t great. She wants to be buried by your father when the time comes. I said yes.”
Pauline patted Dorothea’s hand gently, as if to comfort her. “That way, when you visit their graves, you won’t have to run back and forth. Everything will be a little easier for you.”
