Dorothea gave him a gentle smile. “I’m fine, really. Just tired and running on no sleep.”
After a little while in the hospital room, Dorothea insisted everyone go home. Latham tried to convince her to get some rest back at their place too, but she just shook her head. There was no way she was leaving him alone, no matter how exhausted she was. They settled it by having the hospital staff bring in another bed so she could stay with him.
Neither of them brought up the whole diary drama again. There were plenty of visitors over the next couple of days, people dropping by to check on Latham. But when Carmen and Pearson came, Latham put his foot down. He asked them to let everyone else know not to visit anymore. He was completely over all the fuss and just wanted some quiet time with his wife.
Carmen hugged Dorothea tight. “It’s finally over. Seriously, you need to start looking after yourself, Dorothea.”
Dorothea nodded. “I will. So... you and Pearson? How’s it going?”
Carmen blushed, her cheeks turning pink. “It’s... okay, I guess.”
Dorothea caught the look and couldn’t help but tease her. “Why are you blushing? Is it suddenly hot in here or something?”
Carmen just glared at her, annoyed and clearly not fooled. Dorothea grinned. “Alright, I’ll stop. I just hope you’re happy, Carmen. Seeing you in a good mood makes my day.”
“Mmm.” Carmen pouted, but she couldn’t hide her smile. “It’s not bad. He’s actually not as annoying as he used to be.”
Once they left, the room grew quiet. Latham, ever the picky patient, asked the nurses to push their beds together. He lay there with one arm hooked up to an IV, using his free hand to feed Dorothea cherries one by one.
“Is it sweet?” he asked.
“Very,” Dorothea replied, looking perfectly content.
Latham’s eyes darkened with mischief. “Then let me taste it too.” He leaned in, aiming for a kiss.
Right at that moment, someone knocked on the door, breaking the mood. They both looked up, surprised, and in walked Albert.
They hadn’t really been expecting him. Latham had heard that Albert helped out during everything that happened, but not in any big way.
“What are you doing here?” Latham asked.
Albert shrugged. “Just checking on you.” Then he glanced at Dorothea. “Dorothea, can I talk to him alone for a minute?”
Dorothea blinked, clearly surprised. She hadn’t expected Albert to want to talk to Latham. Instantly, she was on guard. “What do you need to talk to my husband about? Is there something I can’t hear?”
Latham rolled his eyes and gave a low laugh. “Really, Albert? You helped out once and now you get to act all righteous?”
It didn’t matter, anyway. Even if Albert hadn’t called it in, Scott would have tracked everyone down eventually. And the tip from Albert hadn’t even led to the real hideout.
“Don’t worry. The one who hurt her most was you, not me. And I’m never letting you get close to her again.”
Albert took a breath, not looking for a fight. “Just make sure you mean that. I hope you actually know how to keep her happy. That’s all.”
With that, he pulled open the door and stepped out. The whole talk really had taken less than five minutes.
On his way out, Albert caught Dorothea’s eye. For a moment, he just looked at her, more serious than ever. “I’m leaving. Take care of yourself.”
Dorothea’s mouth twitched up into a polite smile. She didn’t linger, just turned and walked back into the room without looking back.
Latham’s harshness faded the moment she was back. In any crowd, from now on, she’d only ever have eyes for him, and that was all he wanted.
