When the World Ends, She Begins novel Chapter 25

Natalie unzipped her backpack and let the little dog out. Her eyes were now bright and alert, no trace of drunkenness left, only brimming excitement.

The moment her paws touched the ground, she joyfully circled around Natalie a few times before dashing away.

Natalie gazed at her with a fond, almost parental smile.

Dogs were born to be playful, and even her usually lazy Lucky enjoyed romping in the open. Staying cooped up with her all the time hadn't been easy on her.

But what choice was there? In this doomsday world, not only pets, few humans could live the way they once did.

"Lucky, don't go too far!"

She called out, then began scanning the area.

Though Broadview District's land was low, this mountain was tall enough for most of it to remain above water.

Lucky had already vanished from sight, and fearing she might meet wild beasts, Natalie hurried up the slope after her.

This was no tourist attraction with neat paths, so climbing took real effort.

Natalie retrieved a trekking pole from her storage space and began ascending with care, calling for the runaway dog.

Eventually, she reached a level clearing.

Looking out, all she saw was an endless stretch of white. She guessed Lucky had gone that way.

She could only raise her voice.

"Lucky!

"Lucky, get over here!"

After several shouts, a large white blur came rushing toward her.

When it neared, she realized in surprise that it was a group of lambs!

There had to be about 200 of them. Delighted, she soon spotted Lucky trotting right behind them.

Everywhere Lucky went, the group split, funneling toward her. Now and then, if one lagged behind, Lucky would leap and nip its rump.

Natalie laughed aloud. Who'd have thought her bulldog could herd lambs?

Her little legs pumped furiously, and she panted hard as she reached Natalie feet, tongue lolling.

Bending down to scoop her up, Natalie scolded gently, "You barely get any exercise, yet you dare run yourself ragged like this?" While speaking, she rubbed Lucky's head.

She had done well—still not fully grown, yet already helping her owner round up livestock.

Natalie took out a steaming drumstick from her storage space, poured water, and set them down.

Lucky darted over to enjoy the meal.

She then turned her gaze to the nearby group of lambs grazing on the grass.
