When They Beg I Rise (Lemira) novel Chapter 1023

Lemira stared at Rowan, her eyes narrowing in confusion.

"Have you forgotten?" Rowan pressed, his voice tight.

"I don't know what you're talking about. What does that serum have to do with me?"

Flashbacks from her previous life assaulted her mind—the grueling process of developing that exact serum, the jagged wound deliberately carved into her cheek, the phantom pain that still burned whenever she thought of it. But she knew for a fact that in this current timeline, she had completely washed her hands of the project.

Caspian stepped up beside them. "Lemira, did you seriously forget? You were the one who unearthed the ancient medical scrolls. Rowan wouldn't have been able to formulate the serum without you."

A vague memory finally surfaced. Lemira let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Oh, right. But didn't you guys decide to announce that Evelina Sterling found the scrolls instead? You wanted to make her resume look a little more impressive, didn't you?"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the Langston brothers.

Rowan furrowed his brows. "Is that true?"

Caspian rubbed the back of his neck, looking miserably guilty. "Evelina played us. She cried and acted pitiful, saying that Lemira was so brilliant it made her feel useless. We felt bad for her, so we agreed to give her the credit."

Rowan's face went rigid with fury. "That's absolutely ridiculous! How could you agree to that? If Evelina isn't talented, that's her own fault. Why would you strip our sister of her achievements just to make Evelina look less incompetent?"

"I know," Caspian muttered. "We were incredibly stupid."

Lucian chimed in, his tone heavy with remorse. "She completely manipulated us. We know how badly we messed up."

Alaric Langston took a hesitant step toward Lemira. "I was the worst of all. I've spent the last few weeks isolated on the island, thinking about everything I've done. I swear I'll make it up to you, Lemira."

Asher sighed, looking impatient. "Exactly. Everyone is apologizing to you, Lemira. You got your revenge, you proved your point. Isn't it time to let this go?"
