Orion stood rigid in the corner of the operating room, watching Rowan's every move like a hawk. Director Harrison remained on standby, monitoring the equipment.
The procedure was executed flawlessly.
As the final tubes were removed, Lemira's eyelids fluttered.
Rowan pulled down his surgical mask, a soft, relieved smile breaking across his face. "It's okay, Lemira. The surgery is over."
The moment Lemira's eyes opened, her vision focused entirely on the man standing over her in a white doctor's coat.
It was a perfect replica of the nightmare.
In her previous life, that was the exact moment she realized her kidney had been harvested. She had woken up to the blinding surgical lights, and Rowan had stood over her, smiling, saying those exact same words.
*The surgery is over.*
Absolute, blinding terror hijacked Lemira's brain. She thrashed violently, desperately trying to hurl herself off the operating table.
Orion was there in a fraction of a second. He caught her, wrapping his arms securely around her trembling body. "I've got you. It's okay, you're safe. I'm right here."
"Get away from me! Don't touch me! It hurts! Stay away!"
Lemira curled into a tight ball against Orion's chest, sobbing hysterically, her entire body seized by violent tremors.
Hearing the sheer agony in her voice, Orion slowly lifted his head. The look he gave Rowan was murderous.
Yet, when he spoke to Lemira, his tone was devastatingly gentle. "It's over, Lemira. Nobody is going to touch you. I promise."
It took agonizing minutes for her panic to subside, the sheer exhaustion finally dragging her back into unconsciousness.
Moving with utmost care, Orion carefully removed the IV from her hand and lifted her into his arms.
He glanced at the director. "Did they deviate from the procedure?"
The director shook his head firmly. "No. Everything was done strictly by the book."
Orion gave a tight nod. He turned his lethal gaze back to Rowan. "Why is she so terrified of you? What exactly did you do to her?"
