The moment Lemira said that, Orion immediately pulled the car over to the side of the road.
He turned to her, his gaze intense. "What else?"
Lemira fell silent for a moment before speaking. "I remember there were people hiding in the bushes by the road."
"That must have been Evelina's father. He was terrified of dying in a crash, so he arranged for a subordinate wearing a silicone mask to take his place. The driver was probably trying to make a run for it, but realized he'd left evidence behind and was forced to go back for it. Nobody expected the car to explode."
Lemira shook her head. "No. There was more than one person."
"Are you sure? Maybe they were accomplices."
Lemira racked her brain but couldn't pull up any more details. Perhaps too much time had passed, and the fragments were simply gone.
She let out a heavy sigh. "Maybe. It could have been Hamlin."
After all, Hamlin was the first one they had apprehended, which eventually led them to Evelina's father.
"A job like that back then couldn't have been pulled off by just one person," Orion mused.
He looked at Lemira. "But it's all over now."
Lemira nodded. "I know. If only I had remembered all of this sooner, I wouldn't have let Evelina run wild in the Langston family for so many years. I could have made the Sinclairs pay the price much earlier."
"If we're pointing fingers, I'm to blame as well for not noticing the Sinclair family's scheming back then. They wouldn't have lived comfortably for so long if I had."
Regret shadowed Orion's features.
Lemira pressed her lips together. "Thankfully, they didn't get their way this time."
In her past life, those people had succeeded and lived the high life.
A sudden thought struck Lemira. She looked at Orion and asked, "If... and I mean purely hypothetically... if you had never met me, would you have eventually married Sophia?"
Orion's brow furrowed. "Don't let Sophia's nonsense get to your head."
"It's just a hypothetical. Just an example."
