Seeing Rowan, Lucian relayed the truth about Evelina's unborn baby. He knew Rowan could be trusted to keep his mouth shut.
Rowan furrowed his brow. "Why tolerate her until now?"
"We can't afford any complications with Evelina's father. We need the trial to go smoothly, so this is the only way."
Rowan's expression darkened ominously. "These people are a plague. If only I had come back sooner..."
None of them would have lived to see another day.
Lucian gave Rowan a wary look; that unsettling feeling was creeping up on him again.
He patted Rowan's shoulder. "Rowan, using the law to punish the Sinclair family is the right way to handle this. It will permanently ruin them. They'll never bounce back."
"But the death penalty is rarely handed down. At most, they'll get life in prison. What right do they have to keep breathing? They belong in hell with Mom and Dad."
Rowan's voice was chillingly detached, his gaze burning with murderous intent.
The sheer malice in his tone terrified Lucian. "Rowan, you know thinking like that is dangerous, right?"
Rowan snapped out of his dark trance. "Of course, it's just a thought. After everything they've put us through, don't tell me you haven't wished they were dead?"
"I'm furious, obviously. But we have to let the justice system deal with them. If we take matters into our own hands, we're no better than they are. We could end up behind bars too, and that's the last thing Mom and Dad would want."
Rowan lowered his eyes. "Make sure Evelina stays at the hospital. Don't let her come back."
Lucian nodded. "I know. I'll arrange for the doctors to keep her there under the guise of monitoring the pregnancy."
If Evelina had the audacity to pull a stunt like this today just to spite Lemira, there was no telling what she might do next.
The best solution was to keep her away entirely, out of Lemira's sight.
After Lucian went back inside, Rowan stood alone in the dark, a contemptuous sneer forming on his lips. "What's a few dead bodies? They all deserve to die."
Lucian could afford to take the high road only because he had never experienced true, agonizing despair.
