She quickly filled him in on the absolute chaos her brothers had caused.
Orion sounded equally exasperated. "Thank god the trial is tomorrow. As long as we have the paternity test proving the child isn't a Langston heir, the case will hold up."
"I am just so suffocated by all of this, you know?"
Lemira had been running on pure adrenaline and fury, but looking at her brothers sitting in the waiting room just drained the life out of her.
She was completely exhausted.
She had said everything there was to say to them. Over and over. But they constantly created massive disasters, only to come crawling back with pathetic apologies.
Orion's deep, soothing voice anchored her. "I know. But once that gavel drops, you never have to deal with them again."
"That's the only thought keeping me from exploding and blocking their numbers right now."
Lemira tightened her grip on her phone. "It's late. You should get some sleep."
"I'm actually at the hospital right now. My mom started feeling unwell. If I wasn't here, I'd already be standing next to you."
Orion was also standing in a sterile hospital corridor, staring out into the heavy, oppressive darkness of the night.
Lemira's heart skipped a beat. "Is she okay? Should I have Rowan go check on her?"
"No need. Rowan already evaluated it. He said it's likely a side effect of her medication. It's unavoidable."
The phrase 'side effect' made her stomach drop.
She forced her voice to stay steady. "Okay. Stay with Amanda. I can handle things on my end."
"Call me if anything happens."
"I will."
Lemira hung up and stared out at the autumn sky. The thick clouds looked like the gaping maw of a beast waiting to swallow her whole.
That dark premonition in her gut grew stronger.
Suddenly, the red light above the operating room flicked off.
The doctor and head nurse stepped out, looking grim. "We are incredibly sorry. We did everything we could, but the patient has just passed away."
The words hit Lemira like a physical blow. She couldn't process it.
