"And you? Are you just going to do nothing?"
"I only need to save our parents' company," Asher replied before hanging up the phone.
Lemira furiously dialed back, but he ignored the call.
She was seething. Asher was truly shameless. Not even the prospect of avenging their parents could sway him.
It seemed the Langston Group was truly on its absolute last legs.
That was why he was resorting to such despicable tactics.
Lemira wanted to call the police, but she worried about escalating the situation and putting Stella at risk.
Instead, she dialed Lucian Langston. His pleasantly surprised voice came through the speaker. "Lemmy! Why are you calling me?"
"Asher took Stella. Do you know what kind of backroom deal he made with the Waverly family?"
Lucian hesitated for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh. "You found out?"
"Let me make this perfectly clear: if anything happens to Stella, I will never let any of you off the hook."
Stella was her best friend.
Lucian spoke softly. "I tried to talk him out of it, but the company is in a terrible state. If you could just ask Orion to invest some money, I know Asher would let her go."
Hearing this, Lemira found the sheer audacity almost laughable.
She couldn't hold back her disgust. "How can you even suggest something so shameless?"
The Langston family continually found new ways to lower her expectations.
Lucian sighed again. "It's the only viable solution right now. Plus, it ensures Stella won't get hurt, right?"
"And why on earth should the Everharts invest a single dime in the Langston Group?"
"Lemmy, I'm only suggesting this for your sake. It solves your current problem, doesn't it?"
Lemira scoffed. "I offered Asher Evelina's exact location in exchange for Stella, and he still refused. You people are entirely selfish, yet you love to play the martyr."
"Lemmy, Mom and Dad built this company. It's just as important."
Lemira didn't want to hear another word of his garbage. She hung up instantly.
Knowing that the Langston family was entirely complicit in this mess, she abandoned any thought of negotiating through them.
Lemira abruptly ended the call.
Orion stared at the disconnected screen. He looked up just as Thaddeus strolled out of his office. Sounding slightly annoyed, Orion asked, "Do I look that unreliable?"
"Depends on who you ask."
Thaddeus raised an eyebrow. "Why isn't Lemon relying on you?"
Orion explained what had just happened. "She completely could have asked me for help."
With his resources, her rescue mission would be far more effective.
Thaddeus clutched his stomach, laughing uncontrollably. "So the day has finally come! Didn't you used to hate girls who were too reliant on men?"
Orion was momentarily speechless. That hit entirely too close to home.
But this was completely different.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Lemira stared at the woman sitting across from her—a woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to Evelina. Her emotions were incredibly complicated.
This was Stella's young stepmother.
