“Until I realized she was just using me to get star points to see how fast she could climb the social ladder. Poor thing didn’t know that no wolf from any high family would ever marry an house keeper regardless of how much access she had. She fell pregnant, kept it a secret, gave birth and ran.”

I blink.

‘I was disgusted by it. By how Janet used me, left her own daughter behind so she could use me to raise you again. I can’t count on one hand the number of wolves she passed through, but I suppose she got lucky eventually with Ronin-”

‘No.” I stand up. Something isn’t adding up and I can feel it. There is a wrongness in the math of it that doesn’t fit.

Derisha looks at me.

‘I’m sorry that she used you but the way you looked at me my whole life!? That wasn’t the face of someone whose housekeeper wronged her. That was personal.” I hold her gaze. “So what am I missing? How exactly did she use you? And why” I stop, and the pieces start moving, rearranging themselves.

‘Why would my mother trust you with me? She left me here. With you, of all people. She had to believe something. She had o think there was a reason I’d belong here, that someone in this house would have to take me in. WHO DID MY MOTHER SLEEP WITH THAT IS CLOSE TO YOU?”

The way Derisha’s mouth presses into a thin tells me I’M RIGHT.

There’s something more-

My father.”

Emris’ grand- I stop. “Emris’ grandfather!?”

No.

No, no, no.

But it fits, Shit…Shit… it fits and makes sense in the most nauseating way imaginable. Derisha looked at me my entire life and t was not like she hated a stranger, but like she hated a betrayal. Like I was proof of something done to her, something that happened inside her own house.

she…she thought I was her step-sister. Not by any dignified arrangement but by the worst possible version of it! My mother

rawled into her father’s bed and then had the audacity to leave the evidence in Derisha’s pack house

And then I grew up and walked into Emris’ life.

Of course, she didn’t believe I was innocent!

Of course she thought I was my mother’s daughter in every sense…manipulative, opportunistic, using her family agam ma new generation. Of course she assumed I’d planted my bra in his room on purpose-

‘So this whole time…”

“I thought you were my step-sister. And then I heard you were Romin’s daughter And then I heard you were Finris mate

Derisha breath. “I spent weeks asking fate why you. Why, out of everyone in the world, did it have to be Janet’s child? I had spent years hating you for something that wasn’t your fault. Yes, you were now found to be Ronin’s daughter. But after spending so long believing my father fathered you, it took time to see you in a different light.”

I don’t say anything anymore.

‘I know this isn’t what you want to hear the morning you become Official Luna of this pack but I’ve kept too many secrets. I’m tired of them.”

“T-thank you.”

I don’t look at her cause I feel like bawling. “Thank you for telling me.”

‘Demetra-”

I turn my chair away and face the mirror instead.

I stare at my hands folded in my lap.

“You being with my son is the happiest I have ever seen Emris.” Derisha says behind me.

I don’t move.

‘I asked fate why you. And then I watched the two of you co-exist. Emris sleeps eight hours now. He doesn’t spend his nights. locked in his office, or burning through cigarettes, or working his way through a bottle of whiskey just to get through the Alpha meetings. The elders see it. The deltas feel it. The zetas have noticed.”

I hear Derisha catch her breath.

‘Demetra. You did nothing wrong to make me hate you for as long as I did. And you have done everything right to make this entire pack love you already.”

I feel my hands trembling in my lap. I press them flat against my thighs and breathe.

‘Do not worry, I will never tell Emris. It’s not his place to know.”

Derisha’s hand settle on my shoulder.

“It was never your fault and I apologize. Knowing your father is Ronin should give you peace today instead of confusion.”

I nod, imagining how fate played the game well enough to save me from being Emris’s cousin. When Ronin became my dad, I didn’t think of how lucky it was that the DNA tests showed we were a match.

It was fate tidying up its own mess, rewriting a mistake before I ever had to live inside it.

I look at Derisha’s reflection in the mirror. This time, softer….but not immediate forgiveness.

“Thank you…for telling me.”

She nods once, then releases my shoulder.

“Get dressed! Emris’ jaw is going to be on the floor when he sees you. Though you’ve had him on the floor already
