Chapter 264 The Pack That Comes After

Gareth

The new house is too full for a place no one has even lived in yet.

Boxes crowd the hallway, bags lean against the stairs, and hockey sticks sit beside a pair of figure skates near the front door. It looks as

though the house has already been warned what sort of nonsense it is expected to survive. The walls are still bare, but the quiet Blake

bought with the house is already gone.

They have brought life with them.

Mara stands beside me on the front path, her hand tucked through my arm as we watch the six of them move through the open doorway.

School is finished now. The last bell has rung, the final games have been played, and somehow, without asking my permission, the

children I helped raise have started stepping out of one life and into the next.

Blake comes through the front door carrying a box that looks too heavy for anyone else and not heavy enough for him.

“Where do you want this?” he asks.

Charlotte appears from the kitchen with her hair tied up, cheeks flushed and tape stuck around her wrist. “Not there.”

Blake pauses. “You don’t know where I was going to put it.”

“I know you,” she says, pointing at him. “And the answer is not there.”

He grins, and Lex flickers behind his eyes for a second, amused and obedient in the way only a mated Alpha wolf can be,

Theo carries two bags at once, drops one at the foot of the stairs, then winces when Emily looks down from the landing.

“That better not have anything breakable in it,” she says.

Theo studies the bag. “It’s probably fine.”

“She is already a better Beta than most adults I know,” Mara says.

“She has had practice handling difficult men,” I mutter, and her elbow finds my ribs, gentle but precise.

Inside, Charlie walks in with a box tucked under one arm and Jess’s overnight bag slung over his shoulder. Jess follows with both hands

holding a leafy plant Emily must have given her.

Charlie looks at the stairs, then the hallway, then Blake. “Where is this going?”

Blake looks at Charlotte, Charlotte looks at Jess, and Jess looks at the plant.

Theo calls down from upstairs, “Not our room.”

Charlie stares up at him. “No one asked you.”

“I am protecting my territory,” Theo calls back.

Charlie’s face goes completely flat, Blake laughs, and the sound settles something in me I did not know was still tight.

There was a time when laughter felt thin in this pack, as if one wrong breath could tear it apart. After the rogue attacks, after fear moved

through our borders like sickness, after blood on snow and children being forced to grow faster than they should have, I wondered if ease

would ever return to us.

But the laughter has come back.

Not the same as before, but real.

Wellington survived more than rogues. We survived grief, old mistakes, and fear. We survived things our children should never have been

asked to face, and somehow, here they are, building a life together.

Blake sets the heavy box where Charlotte tells him to, then turns as Theo nearly trips over the bag he abandoned.

“Pick it up,” Blake says.

Theo opens his mouth, Blake points once, and Theo picks it up.

Mara makes a small sound beside me, almost a laugh, almost a sigh, and I see what she sees.

Blake does not look like an Alpha yet, not exactly, but he looks like someone people already turn toward. He does not need to make his

voice harder to be heard. He speaks, and they listen because he means what he says.

Charlotte says something to Jess, and Jess smiles, shy but brighter than she used to be. She carries the plant toward the kitchen windows,

and Charlie follows a step behind, a shadow with teeth, close enough to catch her if she falls and far enough to let her choose where she

stands.

That is leadership too.

Emily catches Theo by the sleeve before he can start another argument, says something too quiet for me to hear, and his whole face

softens before he takes the bag carefully this time.

Betas.

There’s no ceremony, no oath spoken over them yet. Still, there they are.

Blake and Charlotte in the centre, Theo and Emily watching the spaces between, Charlie and Jess near the edges, already aware of the doors, the windows, and the movement beyond the glass.

Gammas.

The word settles inside my chest before 1 say it.

Mara glances at me. “You see it too.”

“I do.”

She reaches for my hand, and I take it, holding on while the future moves boxes through the door and argues about bedrooms in voices

too young to understand how much they are already carrying.

For years, I thought the hardest part of being Alpha was holding the pack through danger, making decisions with blood in my mouth and

fear at my back, standing between my people and anything that came out of the dark.

I was wrong.

The hardest part is seeing the moment when they will not need you in the same way anymore and choosing to be proud instead of afraid.

Blake steps out onto the porch a few minutes later, wiping dust from his hands. “Are you two just standing out here judging our furniture

placement?”

“Yes,” Mara says.

“Harshly,” I add.

Blake smiles, but there is a question beneath it as he looks back into the house, then at me. “It’s a lot.”

“It is.”

“I know we’re not taking over tomorrow.”

“No,” I say. “Definitely not while I can still run laps around you.”

His shoulders shake with laughter.

Though part of him is ready, part of him is still my boy standing too tall in shoes he has not quite grown into.

“But you are already leading,” I tell him.

His eyes lift to mine.

I place a hand on the same shoulder I have steadied since he was small.
