The back kitchen of Didi Cafe was small, but it was organized and exceptionally clean.
Mia had cleared off the stainless steel counter to create a makeshift workstation. She carefully laid out the bags of raw supplies Veyra had brought over, lining up tapioca pearls, milk powders, whole tea leaves, specialized syrups, and various flavorings.
Holding the leather notebook open with one hand, she checked every item off against the written list. Her finger moved steadily down the page, her lips moving silently as she counted off the ingredients one by one.
When she finished, she looked up with bright, energetic eyes. "The inventory matches the list perfectly," Mia reported enthusiastically. "We actually have enough right here to mix eight of the fifteen recipes right now."
Veyra raised her eyebrows slightly. "Only eight?"
"The remaining seven drinks call for specialized ingredients we don’t have on hand," Mia explained, pointing her pen at the recipe notes. "We still need fresh taro paste, dark brown sugar syrup, a very specific grade of jasmine tea leaves, and a couple of distinct fruit extracts."
Veyra nodded in understanding, pulling out a small pen from her coat. "Write down everything we are missing. I’ll have Leon send someone out to track them down."
Mia grabbed a blank pad of paper and began scribbling rapidly. Her handwriting was small, neat, and surprisingly precise. She tore the sheet off the pad and handed it straight to Veyra.
Stepping toward the kitchen doorway, Veyra passed the paper over to Leon Wei, who was standing guard near the frame like a shadow.
"Can you have someone pick these specific items up for us?" she asked.
Leon glanced down at the handwritten list, scanning the items briefly. "I will handle the errand personally," he said in his usual calm, flat tone. Without another word, he turned and headed out toward the cafe exit.
Veyra walked back to the prep counter, turning her attention to Mia. "So, what about those first eight drinks?"
A confident grin broke across Mia’s face. "Let’s start brewing."
They began with the classic house milk tea, using it as their baseline test.
Mia carefully weighed out the loose black tea leaves on a small digital scale while Veyra monitored the water temperature on the burner. Once the water hit the exact degree specified in the notebook, they steeped the leaves together, letting the bold, rich aroma fill the quiet kitchen.
They measured out the milk, adjusted the sugar ratio, added a scoop of ice, and poured the mixture into a stainless steel shaker. Together, they rattled the shaker back and forth until the metal turned frosty cold.
Mia popped the cap and poured the rich liquid into a clear glass. The color was stunning, a deep, rich amber tone topped with a light layer of foam.
She slid the glass across the counter to Veyra. "You do the honors."
Veyra lifted the glass and took a slow sip, letting the tea sit on her tongue for a second before swallowing. Her eyes drifted shut. The flavor profile was incredibly smooth and well-balanced, carrying the robust depth of the tea leaves alongside the creamy dairy, perfectly sweet without feeling heavy.
She opened her eyes, meeting Mia’s expectant gaze. "This is it," Veyra said softly. "This is exactly how it should taste."
Mia grinned, rolling up her sleeves. "Awesome. Let me prep the next batch."
Over the next two hours, the kitchen turned into a full-scale test lab. They brewed and assembled all eight distinct variations step by step: the classic black milk tea, a dark brown sugar boba, a smooth taro mix, a rich matcha latte, a light honey lemon brew, a peach oolong, a fresh strawberry milk, and a bold Thai tea blend.
Each cup offered a completely different profile, but every single one smelled incredible.
Before long, the stainless steel counter was crowded with colorful glass cups. Faint steam rose from the warm concoctions, while cold condensation dripped down the sides of the chilled iced teas.
Mia took her time tasting a small sip from every single glass, her face shifting through a rapid series of expressions, surprise, intense focus, absolute delight, and strong approval.
Setting down her spoon after the final sample, she looked at Veyra with utter conviction. "These are honestly perfect, Veyra. No tweaks, no adjustments. They are ready for customers right now."
Veyra smiled, feeling a quiet sense of relief. "That is great news."
As the afternoon light faded into early evening, the cafe grew completely quiet. The test cups were emptied, the counters wiped down until they sparkled, and the leftover ingredients neatly stored in airtight containers.
Veyra wiped her hands on a towel and grabbed her leather bag, preparing to head out for the evening.
"Wait a second," Mia called out, leaning against the counter. "What are we actually going to call the shop?"
Veyra stopped in her tracks, blinking. "The name?"
"Yeah, we need an official brand name," Mia said, tapping her chin. "Something memorable and premium."
Veyra stood quietly for a moment, realizing she had been so focused on the logistics, funding, and compound ratios that she hadn’t given the actual store name a single thought.
