Dorian was silent for a long moment.
The armory was quiet. The fluorescent lights hummed. Veyra sat on the edge of the table, her raw hands in her lap, her still wet. She had just told him that she thought she was nothing more than a womb to him.
He walked back toward her. He stopped a few feet away. His gray eyes were unreadable.
"Veyra," he said. "Listen carefully."
She looked up.
"Your primary role in this arrangement is to carry the child. That is true. That is what we agreed upon." His voice was calm. Measured. "But that does not mean I have restricted your personal freedom. You are not a prisoner here. You are not a servant. You are my wife."
Veyra’s breath caught.
"As long as your actions do not interfere with the healthy upbringing of the child, I will not object to what you do." He paused. "Study medicine. Build your business. Become strong. Those things do not harm the baby. They may even help you be a better mother."
Veyra stared at him. She had expected conditions. Restrictions. Demands.
Instead, he was giving her permission.
"You are not just a womb," he said again. "You are a person with rights. Your own rights."
Veyra’s throat tightened.
She had spent seven years with Caspian, who had treated her like a possession. Something to be controlled. Something to be used. Something to be discarded when she became inconvenient.
And now Dorian – this cold, distant man who had married her for convenience – was telling her that she had rights.
Her eyes filled with tears again.
"Thank you," she whispered. Her voice cracked. "Thank you, Dorian."
He looked at her. His brow furrowed.
"Why are you crying?" he asked. "I did not say anything extraordinary."
"Yes, you did." She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, wincing at the sting. "You treated me like a person. Like I matter. Not like I’m just... just..."
She could not finish the sentence.
Dorian was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Someone has treated you badly in the past."
"My ex-husband," she said. "Caspian. He made me feel like I was nothing. Like my only value was in what I could do for him. And when I couldn’t do enough, he threw me away."
Dorian’s jaw tightened.
"You are not nothing," he said. "And you are not with him anymore."
"I know."
"Good."
Veyra took a shaky breath. She composed herself.
"There’s something I should tell you," she said.
Dorian waited.
"The Xander Hale situation. The one from the pizza shop. It’s resolved."
His eyebrows rose. "Resolved?"
"Yes. I ran into him today at Bordeaux 101. He was harassing Dr. Harrison. I negotiated with him."
Dorian’s expression flickered. Surprise, maybe. Or skepticism.
"You negotiated with a known gangster," he said.
"I did."
"And he simply agreed to leave you alone?"
"Not just me. He agreed to leave Clare Clark and her daughter alone. And to stop forcing women into marriage." She paused. "In exchange, I agreed to ask Dr. Harrison to review his mother’s medical records and consider treating her."
Dorian stared at her.
"Just like that," he said.
"Just like that."
He shook his head. "You have a talent for turning enemies into... what? Allies? Debtors?"
"I don’t know. But it worked."
Dorian gave a light scoff. "You have quite a bit of luck on your side."
Veyra grinned sheepishly. "Maybe. Or maybe I’m just persuasive."
She looked down at her hands. The rawness was still there. The pain was still there.
But something else was there too. Satisfaction.
"Dorian," she said. "I need to give you something."
She slid off the table. She walked to the small desk in the corner of the armory. She pulled out a piece of paper and a pen. Her fingers were stiff, but she managed to write.
She wrote:
I, Veyra Thorne, owe Dorian Thorne the sum of one million (1,000,000). This loan will be repaid with interest at the standard bank rate. Terms to be agreed upon.
She signed it. She dated it.
She walked back to him. She held out the paper.
"What is this?" he asked.
"An IOU. For the money you lent me."
Dorian took the paper. He read it. His mouth twitched. Almost a smile.
"You are writing me an IOU," he said.
"I don’t like owing people. Especially not you."
