"I heard you ended up at the South Reef Naval Hospital. How were the conditions out there?"
Sloane kept her tone deceptively light. "Exactly like you warned me over the phone. Absolutely zero decent equipment, and brutally tough."
"Right, well, it's good that you're back." Thorne assumed she was just nursing a grudge over the three-month exile and decided not to hold her attitude against her.
He quickly changed the subject. "Now that you're back, I expect great things. You're a highly capable surgeon. If you keep performing, there will definitely be promotions in your future. By the way, we have a new addition to the team. Let me introduce you."
Thorne picked up his desk phone. "Donna? Step into my office for a second."
A moment later, a tall, impeccably styled young female doctor strolled into the room.
She immediately gave Sloane a slow, assessing once-over.
"So you're Dr. Sutton? You're surprisingly young. Nice to meet you."
Sloane offered a polite, clipped smile. Her instincts screamed that this woman was heavily backed by money or power; otherwise, a notoriously arrogant man like Thorne wouldn't be treating her with such kid gloves.
Thorne gestured between them. "This is Donna Davenport. She recently got her PhD from overseas and is currently completing her residency. I'm assigning her to you, Sloane. Show her the ropes."
Before Sloane could even open her mouth, Donna chimed in, "Looks like Dr. Sutton is going to be my new mentor."
Sloane had absolutely zero desire to be chained to this walking liability. She shook her head. "I'm still quite young and my skills need refining. I'm really not qualified to mentor anyone."
Donna's eyes flashed with unfiltered disdain. She turned to Thorne with a dramatic sigh. "Director Thorne, it looks like Dr. Sutton thinks I'm beneath her."
Thorne immediately went into damage control, offering Donna an apologetic smile. "Dr. Sutton just got back from a remote assignment, she needs a little time to adjust. Let's just do this—Donna, you shadow Sloane for now. Whatever she tells you to do, you do it. Especially in the OR, just watch and learn from her."
Donna muttered something unintelligible under her breath and spun on her heel, marching out of the office.
