ROMAN
I feel like crap without Nikki, and my guilt at leaving her at the flat all by herself without saying a word threatens to choke me every once in a while.
But it was necessary for me to do.
Otherwise, I’d never be able to leave.
Ive been keeping tabs on her, though, as I still have one of my guys watching her every step. They’re not going to let her out of their sights and this time, these guys are reliable.
So, when I received the call that she was headed to one of the hospitals in town, I was worried and I still am. What could she be doing there? Is someone sick? Is she the one who’s not feeling well? have to admit that I’m always close to dropping everything and going to her to find out exactly what’s wrong.
Not having any intonation is torture. I’m still waiting for my guy to get back to me.
My phone rings several minutes later and I hurry to pick it up. I know it’s my guy. “Yes?”
“She’s not a patient.”
“What do you mean, she’s not a patient? What’s she doing there, then?””I don’t know, boss. She would’ve been in the system if she were. I’m walking around the place now, looking for her.
Her car is still parked outside. It might take some time.”
“Do what you have to.”
I hang up, and it crosses my mind that I could easily get this information directly from her if just called. But I’d just be confusing her, and the important thing is that! stay away from her. For her safety.
I know she hates me; I hate myself, too. I fooled myself into thinking I could take on the world if I wanted to, but what happened to her proved that I’m just a weakling in the grand scheme of things.
I just have to make sure that my situation where Garith’s associates are concerned is stable, and that they don’t pose a threat to me.
What if she’s kidnapped again? What if they harm her?
They’d be running a risk, too, because I’ve given my lawyer orders to release those documents in case something happens to me, but l’d rather be safe than sorry.
My phone rings and I reach for it again, assuming that it’s my guy, but it’s not. The voice on the phone is unfamiliar to me. “Hello, Mr. Hayes.”
“Who am I speaking to?” I ask, alarmed.
“This is Leonardo Calieri,” he answers. I tense up because already know who it is-Angus’s son. He’s the oldest, around my age, and then there’s a younger one who’s hooked on drugs and isn’t as successful. This I remember from a conversation I had with Carmen, who had all the details on him. Leonardo was actually the man she was going to marry before she met me and ruined her own life.
I won’t take responsibility for it. ” know you might be wondering why I’ve decided to call you out of the blue.
Well, it’s because I’d like to extend an invitation to you.”
Everything about this alarms me, from his tone of voice to the way he’s phrasing this whole thing. Like he’s trying to contain his anger by acting polite. “An invitation?”
A lawyer?
I don’t even have a chance to open it because my phone rings again and this time, I know who it is. I answer the call by saying, “Tell me something good.”He clears his throat. “Well, I found her.”
I get impatient. “And?”
“Well, it seems she’s leaving the hospital right now, and she isn’t alone.”
“What do you mean? Who’s with her?”
“Some guy.”
It’s probably Mason, but just to be on the safe side, I tell him, “Send me a photo.”
“On it.”
Seconds later, I receive it, and as I zoom in to see the face of the guy with his fucking arm around her shoulders, I see red when I realize it’s Sebastian.
What the actual fuck?
