ROMAN
The day has arrived.
The results of the paternity test are meant to be out and I’m shitting bricks waiting for it. At this point, my lawyer already has access to it, so all he has to do is call and tell me whether or not I’ll be a father.
On the surface, I don’t really think I impregnated anyone. I mean, what are the chances? I saw the condom on the floor. I ensured that I hadn’t spilled my seed inside of her.
On a deeper level, though.’m fucking terrified because know the possibility is pretty damn huge, which is crazy considering I don’t even remember what she looks like
I fold my hands and stare at the phone. “Come on, asshole.
Call.”
For better or for worse, I just want to get this done and over with.
Exactly thirteen minutes later, he calls. I press the phone to my ear, heart beating in my damn throat, and say,
“No
bullshit. No beating around the bush. Yes or no?”
The few seconds it takes for him to answer feel like a lifetime. “Yes.”
I’m in disbelief. Did I hear it well? “What?””You’re the father.”
I throw myself against the backrest of my chair and run my free hand through my hair. This can’t be happening to me. Not at all. No way on earth. No way in hell. “Fuck me.”
“That she did,” he replies dryly. “And it seems she’s got the
DNA test to prove it. I’m sorry, Roman. I know you weren’t expecting this.”
“You’re sure you can read? That’s what the test says?”
“It’s right in front of me. I’ve already forwarded it to your email. You can have a look at it whenever you want. I think that, following this result, what we have to talk about is what your next steps should be.”
I’m in a terrible mood. I want to kill someone and I’m not even kidding. “I can’t do this right now. Not now. I have to think about this.”
“Sure. Her lawyer is expecting a prompt response, but we can push our response back a few days. Remember: the quicker we deal with this, the less of a scandal we can avoid.” –
I hang up before he says anything else and stand up.! place both hands on my desk and stare at everything as if through a haze. I run a hand down my face as my man quickly tries to come to terms with what I just heard.
I can’t.
I’m going to be a father. A father. And the mother of that child won’t be Nikki.
“Jesus Christ,” I say under my breath. I have the urge to break everything around me and run to a place where l’Il never be found, but this is a baseless fantasy.
Nikki will have to find out about this, and I have no idea how she’ll take the news.
Why? I don’t understand why this had to happen to me right when things between her and me are going well and we’re more in love than ever. Sure, I didn’t cheat on her.
We were separated when I got involved with that woman! don’t even remember.
But that’s still bound to hurt.
Right?
My cell rings and I tense when I see that it’s Nikki. I swallow the knot of nervousness forming in my throat and answer. “Hey, baby.”
“Hi,” she says. I can hear the smile in her voice and it makes me feel a thousand times worse. “I was wondering if you wanted to stop by later? I’ll be alone. Mason will go on a date.”
I rub my forehead. “Of course, baby. You know I can never say no to you.”
I messed up this time. Badly.
My secretary knocks on my door and I’m so impatient that I yell at her. She apologizes and says, “I’m sorry, Mr. Hayes, but you asked me to remind you about the appointment you have with Dr. Sullivan. It’s in half an hour.”
I check the time on my watch. He’s an important client and I can’t be late.
– I grab my shit and head toward the elevator. With all of this going on, it’s hard for me to focus on work, but I have to. I’ve been slacking off way too much. I find myself in the lobby, checking the time again, and someone calls my name.
An unfamiliar voice, at that.
I snap my head in the direction of the voice and see a woman whose face isn’t familiar to me. She smiles when we make eye contact and approaches me. “Roman. Hi.”
I check the time on my watch and start walking away from her again. Usually, I’d explain to her that she needs to make an appointment with my secretary, but right now, I’m not in the mood to be polite.
“I’m Esmeralda,” she says to my back. The words make mestop and turn my head to face her. I scan her face, taking in the small bump of her stomach. “I thought we could have a word.”
I whirl around to face her and close the distance between us in a few strides. “I’ll only say this once. You don’t contact me for anything, do you understand me?
Anything you want, you let your lawyer know, and he’ll let my lawyer know. Understood?”
“But I thought-”
I make my way out of the building and don’t stop. She calls my name but I keep going, making sure not to turn around again.
I’m fucked with a capital F.
This time, there’s no way out of this.
