NICOLE
I’m sitting across from Sebastian while the lawyer, a woman in her late forties, is seated at the head of the table, wearing a bright pink shirt with strawberry blonde hair.
Of course, Katie would have a woman like this as her lawyer.
She folds up the letter Katie left for both me and Sebastian, and I’m literally fighting back tears because I feel honored. Though she didn’t have much left because of how much she dedicated to charities and other non-profit organizations to help women in need, she said in the letter that she made sure to leave a piece of herself to the two people in the world whom she loved the most.
The fact that I’m in this letter is…l can’t even explain it. Katie cared about me so much, and I just wish I’d called her more often or gone to see her. Sure, we spent a lot of time together when Wings of Grace was still operating, but now that she’s gone, there’s a gaping hole inside of me that won’t close for a while.
“Well. Now, I’ll detail exactly what was left for each of you.”
For Sebastian, she left her house, her car, and stocks in some companies. For me, she leaves jewelry, pieces of art, a few shares in a company she owns, and other miscellaneous items valued at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars!
My mouth falls open.
Katie had a million dollars worth of shares in a company called Calieri Holdings, and that means she owned a portion of the company.
Currently, Sebastian holds the biggest share. This is the money Katie was living off before she died.
“Your current yield rate is about four percent-that’s the part of the company you own. So, you’ll be earning roughly forty to fifty thousand dollars a year.”+20 Bonus
Forty thousand a year…it’s enough to live comfortably for my whole life.
The lawyer tells me I can sell the shares later if I want to, but Sebastian advises me against it, so I’ll stick with that for now.
The point of the matter is that I never worked a day in my life to earn this money, and now, I have a chance to live comfortably.
All thanks to Katie.
My mind is still spinning as I walk out with the bag of jewelry tucked under my arm. Sebastian is walking beside me. We haven’t said a word to each other since we left the office. He’ll accompany me to fetch the art pieces later, as they’re in her home-the one he owns now.
Forty thousand dollars…Mason won’t believe it.
“How do you feel?” Sebastian asks, just when we reach the elevator.
“I have no idea,” I admit breathlessly. I’m so overwhelmed by everything. “I guess I’m still in disbelief.”
“If you need help with anything, you’re free to contact me at any time, alright? I really mean that, Nicole. I’m here for whatever you need me.”
“Thanks, Sebastian.”
We step out of the elevator side by side. We’re in the lobby of the building now, and a security guard allows us to pass through the barriers to reach the exit. look up and see Emeralda walking through the barrier right next to ours, wearing dark sunglasses even though we’re indoors. I look down at her belly bump and notice that it’s bigger than when I last saw her.
She doesn’t see me, and I don’t try to catch her attention in any way.
I’m almost at the exit when someone grabs my arm from behind. A surprised gasp escapes me, and I become even more surprised when I see Roman standing behind me.
He looks like he wants to kill someone.
“And you’re impossible! You’re a damn headache, Nikki!”
We reach his car and he presses me against the vehicle to fish his keys out of his pocket. This is all so I don’t escape. Then, unlocks the car and practically forces me inside.
“Roman!”
He climbs in right beside me so I’m forced to settle into the passenger’s seat. He’s so quick that when I try to unlock my door, he locks us both in the car before starting it.
I’m seething. “Respect my wishes for once! I don’t want to be in here with you, why can’t in get that!?”
“What were you doing with Sebastian?”
I groan loudly and turn my whole body away from him, staring out the window. He pulls out of the parking space and practically growls. ” Nicole! Answer my question right now! Remember what I told you about him! I’ll fucking hurt him and I’m not even kidding!”
“You’re crazy!” I yell. My throat hurts from the effort. “Why do you always assume the worst of me!? Doesn’t it ever cross your mind that ! was with him for a reason!?”
My answer is supposed to calm him, but he looks even angrier. “Don’t tell me you answered me because you’re afraid of what I’m going to do to him! Nikki-are you fucking kidding me?”
I have an urge to cry. “You’re tormenting me! This has to stop! You make me fucking hate you sometimes, you know that!? I HATE YOU!”
Roman doesn’t look at me. He steps on the gas like he doesn’t have plans to see the sun rise tomorrow, and all that I can do is sit tight and hope we don’t crash the car and die.
