Wild Nights With My Brother’s Ex-Best Friend novel Chapter 143

NICOLE

We arrive at Roman’s mansion- yes, the same one he took me to several days ago. I glance at Angus, who’s seated right next to me in the black SUV we’re in, and ask, “What the hell is this about? Why are you bringing me here?”

“Do you know the guard?” he asks instead of answering my question. The guard is walking toward us right now.

“No.”

“Well, then.”

The guards knocks on the window with his gloved hand, and Angus rolls it down. “Good morning. What can I do for you?”

I glance at Angus uncertainly before saying to the guard, ” I’m with Roman. Could you open the gate?”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Miss.”

“Why?”

“Mr. Hayes didn’t leave any instructions for us. In fact, he told us never to let anyone in without contacting him first.

“Is he here?”

No

Who is ?

“I’m afraid that’s confidential. If you have no permission from Mr. Hayes, I’ll have to ask you to leave.”

Angus intervenes. “Now, hold on, young man. I think you’re being rude. This young woman here might just be your boss in the early future, and Mr. Hayes won’t be happy to know that you mistreated her like this.”

“I’m just following orders.”

Angus reaches into his pocket and removes a wad of cash.

I think there might be ten thousand dollars in it. I watch the exchange wide-eyed. “Do this for me and the money’s yours. What? Are you afraid of losing your job? Don’t be.

I’ll get you another one. Wouldn’t you want to work for a man who hands out ten thousand dollars without blinking an eye? Don’t be a fool.”

I can see that the guard is swayed, and when he reaches for the money, Angus smiles and turns to me before mouthing, “Power.”

l ignore him. I’m too nervous to focus on anything else, and by the time the gate opens, my heart is beating in my throat and it’s hard for me to breathe. I’m nervous because I don’t know what to expect. Surely this has to be something serious because Angus wouldn’t have brought me here otherwise.

“See? Roman doesn’t even have loyal people around him.

Is this the man you think can protect you?””What does it matter, Angus? Why would I need protection?”

“You’re a Calieri now. Of course, you need protection.

People will start finding out about you. You’ll be in danger. Roman can’t protect you. Hell, he can’t even protect himself. Anyway, we’ll talk more about this later.

I’m still wondering what the hell she’s doing here, and what this has to do with Roman. There’s an answer for this in the back of my mind. If I really think about it, I’m going to be able to figure it out, but I can’t. I’m too shocked.I refuse to believe whatever is happening right in front of me.

I walk toward her slowly. My grip on my handbag is the only thing rooting me. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

“You might be wondering how I know Emeralda,” Angus cuts in. “She was always with Armand, you see, and I know Armand very well.” He then says to Emeralda, “I see you’re comfortable here. It’s a big place.”

“Yes,” she answers, not taking her eyes off me. “Roman is… very generous.”

Hearing his name leave her lips makes my head spin so fucking fast that I nearly throw up. My stomach is churning and I feel so sick. So damn sick.

“Is there a nursery somewhere in here?”

“Yes,” she again answers, rubbing her belly. Her eyes are still on my face. “We have everything ready for when the baby comes. He’s been very cooperative. He wants the best for his child.” After a pause, she adds, “We might just raise him together.”

I can’t take it anymore, I turn on my heel and race toward the nearest bathroom. I remember the directions from the last time I was here. I turn a sharp left, then head down a short corridor before reaching the first door and throwing it open.

I sink to my knees in front of the toilet and heave. I throwup everything I had this morning, and all the while, tears are snaking down my face. My vision is blurry. My whole body feels tight, and I’m sure that if I uncoil, I’ll fall apart completely:

I can’t believe this is happening to me.

I just can’t.
