Nicole
I reach the office and dump the file on Angus’s table. He gives me a satisfied little look. “Thank you.”
I roll my eyes at him before walking out of his office and slamming the door. I’m not in the mood for his shenanigans today. He has this terrible habit of provoking people until they snap, and I hate him for it.
Because if I snap, people will get hurt and he’ll make sure to remind me that I’m the reason why.
Kjust have to endure him.
I’m walking toward the lobby when I see Sebastian talking to the secretary. I approach him with a furrow between my eyebrows and say his name.
He turns around. “Nicole.”
“What’re you doing here? I’m sorry I’m late. I just had to stop by the apartment quickly. We can”
“I’m sorry about yesterday,” he interrupts, closing the distance between our bodies. The executive assistant he was talking to, Renate, turns her head away and makes sure to turn around to give us some privacy. “Maybe I laid it on too thick. Maybe I should’ve given you more time.”
“No, Sebastian, it’s not about that. I didn’t bail on our date.
I genuinely just had something to do. It was supposed tobe quick, but…”
Sebastian watches me. I hate that I don’t know what else to say to him. I sure never expected him to come up here and ask me about this.
“Right,” he finally says before nodding. “….’Il see you tomorrow, then?”
“Yeah.”
He walks toward the exit, and Renate and I exchange a look before she ducks her head. I go back to my office, unsure of how to feel about this interaction I just had with Sebastian.
I feel so stuck. It’s a terrible feeling.
I hear someone knocking on my door. It’s Angus. He enters my office holding a file in his hand. “I heard Sebastian was here. What did he want?”
“I don’t see how this concerns you.”
Angus smirks and approaches my desk. “Yes, you do. You know as well as I do that I think he’s the best match for you, so of course it concerns me.”
“I have work to do,” I say dismissively. Angus is the last person in the world I want to be talking to right now.
Much less about this.
Angus doesn’t move from his position, though, not evenwhen I switch my computer on and get started on the work his son brought here for me.
Eventually, I sigh and face him. “What do you want from me?”
“I want to know if you’ve already made up your mind concerning Roman Hayes, and if he’s the reason why you haven’t accepted Sebastian yet.”
His words irritate me. “First of all, I don’t see how that’s your business. And even if I decide that I don’t want anything to do with Roman, that doesn’t automatically mean that I’ll stay with Sebastian. You really need to get off my back with this!”
“Hm,” he says before setting the file in front of me. I stare at it and don’t reach for it. “Open it. I have something inside for you. Received just last night.”
He claims to care about me, but if that’s the case, then why is he pushing this matter so damn hard?
“Don’t look at me that way, Nicole. You’re my daughter, and children need to be guided by those who have lived longer than them and have the ability to see past a handsome face.”
“I’m not a child anymore,” I remind him in a low voice.
“Hm,” he mutters before smiling and gathering the photographs. I get one last glimpse of the other woman who kissed his cheek. The woman I don’t know. Who is this bitch? I’m fuming just at the sight of her lips touching him.
Roman. Roman, Roman, Roman.
I have a desire to kill him! Just strangle his thick neck with my bare hands until he stops breathing!
How can he judge me for having lunch with Sebastian when he’s doing so much worse? Angus leaves my officewithout a word but he looks smug because he knows he won this time around. He even has a private investigator following me and snapping pictures of me.
The…I don’t even have words for him. I ran out of insults.
I try to push him out of my mind as I get started on work, but it’s impossible. The more I think about it, the angrier l get.
In the end, I have to work until late because I’m not done yet, but Roman hasn’t left my mind for a second, not him or that woman. Or even Emeralda. How can he lie to me?
When I reach for my car keys, I should be headed to Mason’s to grab my things, but instead, I find myself driving to the penthouse.
Bastard. I won’t let him get away with these lies.
