Nicole
“Nicole? What the hell are you doing!?”
He charges towards us, so fast that it makes my head spin, and then he positions himself beside Haley and throws an arm around her shoulder.
I watch my brother doing this and wonder where the hell things went so wrong.
“Nicole!” he says again. This time, when he looks up at me, he’s not shocked. He has anger written all over his face.
“You can’t seriously believe that I started this!” I spit. “I told you I didn’t want to come in here because I knew she’d start some shit, and that’s
exactly what she did!”
“N-No,” Haley says. Oh, God. She’s stuttering now and tears are pouring down her face. I can’t believe the show she’s putting on right now in front of Mason.
And like the idiot he is, he’s buying it!
“I didn’t want any trouble,” Haley cries before sniffling. “I just wanted to talk to her and try to explain my part! I know that I’m not wanted here and-”
I don’t even let her finish. “That’s not true, Mason. Don’t even listen to her! She’s a liar and a manipulator, and she’s trying to-”
“She’s pregnant,” Mason remarks, disgusted. We’ve had a lot of arguments and I’m not going to say that we have never said ugly words to each other, but he’s never looked at me this way before. “How can you hit her while she’s pregnant?”
“She hit me first!” I exclaim, pointing at my face. “Don’t you see theredness? I know you see it because it stings! Pregnant or not, if she hits me, ‘ll hit her right back!”
Haley shakes her head with wide, exaggerated eyes and | just want to – walk up to her and punch her across the face. I’m filled with violent urges because she’s lying right to my face and I have no way to prove it because Mason walked in just as l was slapping her.
“I didn’t mean to cause any trouble. I swear didn’t.” Haley buries her face in his chest and Mason holds her. Meanwhile, his eyes haven’t left my face and he’s turning redder and redder.
I can’t believe it.
He believes her lies. He’s actually against me.
“You were wrong for doing that, Nicole,” he says in a much lower voice.
“She’s carrying my baby. Do you understand that?”
Angrily, I retort, “How can you be so sure the baby’s yours? There was a man in here when I walked in. He was in the living room. That’s why she’s causing this fuss! She wants to distract you from that fact! She knew I was going to mention it!”
It’s very hard for me not to wish her the worst.
As soon as I enter the penthouse, I smell the delicious dinner Roman is cooking up. I force a smile on my lips and hope my face won’t give away the fact that I was crying, but as soon as Roman spots me, his face falls.”What happened?”
“Nothing,” I try to assure him. “I just-”
“You can’t bullshit me, Nikki. You know that.” He cups my face and stares at me intently. “Tell me what happened.”
I break down and he holds me close to him, muttering soothing words in my ear while stroking my hair. It takes me a while to get the words out, but I explain what happened to him.
“I can’t believe he’s so blind!” I cry out. “Haley’s a monster! How can he believe her? She’s a manipulative…gah! I don’t even have the words to describe her anymore. I ran out of them.”
Roman takes a deep breath. “I know this hurts, and you have every right to feel this way, baby. Believe me. But Mason’s got to learn his tesson. You can’t do everything for him. Sooner or later, he’ll find out who she is and he’ll probably get hurt again, but that’s on him. You can’t teach someone what pain is like. They’ll have to feel it for themselves.”
I know he’s right, but it still hurts. A lot. “I just…I can’t help but wonder if anything is ever going to be normal again in our lives, you know?”
Roman kisses my forehead and says nothing.
