NICOLE
My head’s spinning from all the attacks. Carmen wasn’t satisfied with just slapping me across the face—she also resorted to punching me and pulling me by my hair until my eyes water.
“Bitch!” she practically screeches. “Do you have any idea of how long I’ve been planning to do this to you? | loved that man. I still do. And you felt the need to take him away from me!”
I can feel my face start to swelt in some parts, particularly on my left cheekbone. My scalp is so tender. This is hell, and if I manage to survive this awful experience, I’m sure it’s one that I’m never going to forget.
Carmen has this wild look in her eyes. It scares me a little, but only because of how aggressive she’s being. What if she decides to poke one of my eyes out? Or rip my hair from my skull?
Knowing that she has the power to inflict pain on me and do anything she wants, essentially, makes me feel sick to my stomach.
“You can say whatever you want about me,” I say weakly before spitting blood from my mouth. “At least I’ll never fight another woman for a man who doesn’t want me!”
Carmen blinks, then smiles. “Whether he wants me or notdoesn’t matter, whore. It’s all about what he has to do.
Marrying me is his obligation because he can’t jüst fuck me and leave me whenever he wants. I’m not a nobody Like you. I have influence. I’m more important than he’ll ever be!”
God. I can only imagine how unhappy Roman was in their relationship if this is the way she feels. She steps back and wipes my blood off her nails. “He’s a nobody. Just because he’s filthy rich doesn’t mean he’s someone out of the blue. His surname carries no weight. He’s just the guy from the slums who got lucky, I’m the one who will give his name prestige. Every time they bring up his name in the press, it’ll be in association with me.”
I shake my head. “You still think he’ll marry you? After the shit you just pulled?”
Carmen shrugs carelessly. “If he doesn’t, then you’ll find out just how he truly doesn’t give a rat’s ass about you.
Either way, I’ll get what I want. I always do.”
“Not this time,” I assure her. “He won’t marry you, and if you kill me, he’ll have even more reasons not to be with you.”
“Ha, ha. You’re so sure of yourself, aren’t you?” She puckers her lips and makes a face. “Aw. You think you know him. If you did, you would never have entertained him because at the end of the day, he’ll always choose someone influential and powerful who’ll grow his wealth, not a nobody like you. That’s who he is. That’s who he values.Het out a mocking laugh. She’s truly so delusional. She just hurt me, and that means Roman will be furious.
Carmen can say whatever she wants about him, butl know his heart. His feelings. I know he cares about me and that he’ll do anything in his power to stop her.
What I don’t know is when that’ll happen.
Before she can hit me again for laughing at her, the door opens and she looks over her shoulder in confusion. I stare at her side profile and fantasize about kicking her face in.
I’ve never felt this strange aggression before, but now isn’t the time.
Garith, her father, is striding toward us, dressed in an immaculate black fitted suit. My blood turns to ice in my veins and goosebumps cover every part of my body.
What’s he doing here?
“There. Much better, wouldn’t you say?”
I keep my mouth shut.
“Seeing you now reminds me of how much I wanted you,” Garith begins. I find his words shocking, to say the least. ” You’re all I could think of for a long time. It was… distracting. I’ve never once encountered a woman who didn’t want me back. You were the first.”
“Will you take me back to Roman?” I interject. That’s the general idea that I got from his intrusion.
Garith ignores me. “My only chance to see you was when Armand gave me a call, but after he left that scandalous little whore of his, well, my hopes were shattered. She got pregnant, you see? Had the audacity to conceive a child who wasn’t Armand’s.”
I gasp. I never assumed that Emeralda’s child wasn’t Armand’s. “How does he know it isn’t his?”
“He had a vasectomy many years back.”
A long stretch of silence passes. Garith’s still looking at me in that disturbing way. He didn’t even answer my question. I start working on the rope tying my feet to the legs of the chair.
He then says, “I want a little taste of you, Nicole.”My head snaps up and I stare at him in disbelief. He then turns away, disappearing through the door. I’m not given much time to untie the knots. Three men stride into the basement, heading straight toward me. In no time, I’m untied, and then I’m being dragged toward the exit, too, kicking and screaming.
