There were a million reasons why he needed to get in the bed with her. The list was long and airtight.
Yes, she was naked. But that was actually better.
Skin contact was the absolute best way for him to help her regulate her flame and temperature. It was also the best way to pull out the excess Luminari light that had been building since she woke.
Nothing was going to happen. He was exhausted and had finished twice in her bathing chamber. Two rounds of it meant the tank was empty until morning.
His dragon rumbled impatiently.
You came twice. Nothing will happen. Get in the bed.
"Did you just use my own argument against me? Did my own dragon just—you know what, fair. Goddamnit."
Kael bolted Guinevere’s doors and started back towards the bed. Halfway there he froze. If she woke up naked on top of him, she would absolutely panic.
She needs us. We hold her now.
"Yes, we hold her. Do us both a favor and act like a dragon."
He settled onto the bed, carefully drawing her on top of him without looking at her naked body. But fuck, he felt every inch of it. Skin against skin.
It didn’t matter. He was here for healing. Not for the way her breasts pressed against his chest or the soft heat between her thighs. Healing.
Her flame was barely an ember and needed a spark. His wasn’t much better, but he had enough to wake hers. When he pushed it into her, hers responded like a fire being given air. It roared back to life, then fed him in return, the power looping between them in a tightening cycle that gained strength with every pass.
Kael blinked at the ceiling, stunned. He had never heard of that being a thing.
His dragon was unimpressed.
Two flames. One fire. Mate. Obvious.
Without thinking, his hand moved to the back of her head, working slow circles just as he had been doing before the healer arrived. Tension drained out of her body, every muscle relaxing into him. Unconscious or not, she was stressed and this absolutely helped.
Somewhere in the middle of it, the room stopped being dark.
Kael looked down. They both were glowing gold, dim at first, but brightening by the second.
Then his hand tingled, and he realized it wasn’t just flame moving between them.
The ring that saved his life, the one she’d given him, cooled for the first time all night. It had been burning for hours, and he had assumed it was tied to whatever was happening with her light. This confirmed it. He could feel the excess pulling into him through contact. Slow, but it was happening.
She made a noise against him, one of relief. A sound that sent more blood south.
His heartbeat was doing a full drum solo in his ears. She was still very naked on top of him. He was also very hard. Both facts he already knew. He had the data and it hadn’t changed. But it had his full, undivided, slightly panicked attention.
Then her scent shifted without warning.
One second Kael was lying on the bed with her on top of him, the next he was seeing gold spots, blinking up at the ceiling.
"Gwen, I really need your subconscious to stop this shit."
Control slipped. His hips rolled up into her on their own, pressing his aching length against her before he could stop it.
Another involuntary thrust. Then another.
"I want to fuck you. I’m also trying to not fuck you. Both things are happening."
To his horror, she rolled against him, nuzzling into the crook of his neck more.
"I’m going to hell. Multiple hells. They’ll name a new one after me."
His dragon surged so hard, Kael saw gold and nothing else, and his body wasn’t his anymore. His hips were moving, chasing friction, and she was starting to grind back against him.
"Please, I can’t," he panted to his dragon. To the Goddess. To the empty room.
The pounding in his ears got louder as he fought for control. Without touching any bandages, he cupped her ass with both hands and spread her cheeks.
Instantly, the runes on her body flashed bright. But it wasn’t just her. White bright symbols were forming on his arms in real-time.
