Chapter 1
“Wren, I gotta bounce. Text me if you need anything.”
Before I could respond, Tessa jumped in again.
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted if anything comes up with Wren. Go handle your business!”
“Make sure you eat something – can’t have you starving yourself!”
Then she gave this shy little giggle and did this cringey little wave.
Dad coughed awkwardly and practically sprinted out of there.
As I unpacked, I couldn’t help thinking: Are all college kids this unhinged these days?
Next thing I know, Tessa knocked all my stuff onto the floor.
“So where’s my welcome gift? You know, respect for your elders and all that?”
I stared at her, genuinely confused about whether she was serious or just messing around.
When I didn’t move, she actually slapped me, hands on her hips, glaring.
“Is that how you look at your elders? Zero manners!”
“I’m gonna have to teach you some respect for your father’s sake! Otherwise, don’t even think about coming home!”
She was dead serious.
I shot up and shoved her to the floor, pointing and yelling.
“Since when do they let psychos into college? Get help!”
People outside heard the commotion and came running to gawk.
Tessa collapsed on the floor, fake-crying.
“I know you hate me! But I’m really trying to be a good stepmom…”
Everyone gasped, totally shocked by what she’d just said.
I was fuming, staring at her in disbelief.
“My dad doesn’t even know you exist! Have you completely lost it trying to marry rich?”
Tessa stood up and shoved her phone screen in everyone’s faces.
“See for yourselves! Do I know her dad or not?”
“She’s just mad I stole daddy’s attention, so she’s taking it out on me!”
And people actually started nodding, looking at me like I was the villain.
I was so confused – what the hell had she shown them?
I grabbed her phone and looked at the screen.
