You Faked Your Deaths to Punish Me?! That’s Illegal, Family! novel Chapter 51

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

The next few days were surprisingly quiet.

Chloe had moved out. Wyatt stopped bothering me.

It was like we had nothing to do with each other anymore.

Until two weeks later.

I’d just gotten to work when my boss called me into his office.

He said the interview with Wyatt Calloway had been a huge success.

The Calloway family wanted to do a longer feature-and they specifically requested me as the interviewer.

Hearing that, I smirked.

Here we go. They’re more desperate than I thought.

I agreed to the interview immediately.

I even suggested we invite his fiancée, Chloe, to join. You know, for added buzz.

On the day of the interview, Wyatt and Chloe showed up right on time.

“Maren, I honestly didn’t think you’d invite me.”

When Chloe saw me, she dropped the cold act from before.

She almost seemed… like she wanted to make up.

“You’re my best friend. Who else would I invite?”

I smiled and played along.

“By the way, your wedding’s coming up soon, right? Make sure you invite me.”

I grabbed her hand affectionately, not missing the flash of stiffness on her face.

“Maren, what are you even talking about? Wyatt and I just got together. We’re nowhere near getting married yet.”

Chloe waved me off with a laugh-but it looked forced as hell.

And then, her thoughts came flooding back.

“Give her a smile

Chapter 4

Right on cue, Wyatt sat down next to me-and casually scooted his chair a little closer.

“Maren, I’ve been thinking… I still owe you. For that bag.”

“Testing you with a fake bag like that? That was messed up. Anyone would’ve been pissed. It had nothing to do with being materialistic.”

“So I got you a new one today. Think of it as me making things right. I mean, we meant something to each other once, didn’t we?”

Wyatt handed me a beautifully wrapped gift bag, his eyes full of sincerity.

I took the bag-but kept my eyes on Chloe.

“Chloe, your man’s giving gifts to another woman right in front of you. You’re not even a little jealous?”

I said it bluntly.

Chloe froze, clearly not expecting me to be so direct. Then she shot Wyatt a playful glare.

“Babe, you could’ve at least told me you were getting Maren something. I’m a girl-I’d know way better what she’d actually like.”

“What if you picked something she hates and now she’s secretly mad at you?”

“I mean, you’re not with her anymore. You’re with me. You see me every single day. You know everything I like.”

Chloe shot me a smug look.

“Really? ‘Cause I actually love this bag.”

“Guess even though we’re not together anymore, you still remember what I like, Mr. Calloway.”

I said it with just enough meaning to make Chloe’s face darken.

And Wyatt seemed to get the message too.

The second the interview ended, he texted me. Wanted to meet up privately.

Said there was a new restaurant he wanted to try, but Chloe was on a diet, so he thought of me.

Also said that even if we couldn’t be lovers, maybe we could try being friends.
