Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Two months had passed.
Our divorce was still dragging on forever.
My lawyer told me Alexander was being stubborn as hell, refusing to sign the papers.
I didn’t get it.
Hadn’t I made myself crystal clear back then?
What was the point of dragging this out?
I hung up the phone, feeling genuinely disgusted with the man.
The next day was the Sterling family dinner.
As a nominal daughter-in-law, I still had to show up.
After all, the family didn’t know about Alexander and me falling apart.
But I never expected to run into Chloe again.
The woman looked radiant, dressed in a red silk dress, bustling around like she owned the place.
I shot Alexander a pretty sarcastic look.
“Victoria,” he looked panicked, quickly shaking off Chloe’s hand. “Grandpa won’t let me send Emma away. She’s just a kid, so I…”
I raised an eyebrow, amused.
“It’s none of my business. You’re a free man-you don’t need to explain your little side pieces to me.”
“Besides, I’m pregnant.” I stared him down, not backing down an inch.
Alexander’s face went completely blank, his eyes wounded.
“Preg…nant?” He looked hollow, like a lost little boy.
Because the last time we’d slept together was six months ago on Valentine’s Day.
mess with my head, right?” He desperately wanted an answer.
ily.
be a pretty pathetic lie. No point. Stop clinging.”
can we at least get through today first?” His voice was all pleading and compromise.
I glanced around at the curious stares.
Now wasn’t the time for a scene.

Alexander looked relieved.
Meanwhile, Chloe was clenching her jaw so hard, her nails digging into her palms.
The celebration began, packed with guests.
Through all the clinking champagne glasses and small talk, I caught glimpses of that intimidatingly elegant man who used to make people nervous just by existing.
Except today was different.
Alexander stuck to my side like glue.
And Chloe stuck to his back, following his every step.
It was weird as hell.
Finally, with everyone whispering around us, Chloe lost it..
She pushed past Alexander and blocked my path, looking all high and mighty.
“Victoria, what gives you the right to treat Alex like this?”
I stopped and looked at her with pure mockery.
“Who the hell do you think you are? What gives you the right to question me?” I glanced over at little Emma nearby. “You think you can marry into the Sterling family just because you popped out a kid?”
Chloe went rigid, looking shocked and panicked.
Obviously she hadn’t expected me to be so blunt.
“You! Are you insane? I’m not as pathetic as you’re making me out
She looked at Alexander with teary eyes, clearly expectinp.
to
be!”
When his expression didn’t budge, Chloe swayed like she might collapse.
I let out a cold laugh, stepping closer to look down at her with pure contempt.
y that shit again, and I’ll show you just how hungry those wolves in my family backyard have been.”
patted her pale cheek and walked away.
Chloe stood there, humiliated, watching Alexander follow me.
She was literally shaking with jealousy. And she kept taking deep breaths, trying not to look completely wrecked.
People are opportunistic creatures.
When Mrs. Sterling made her position clear, people at the party were more than happy to pile on.
Making Chloe’s shame burn even brighter as she stood there helplessly in the middle of the ballroom.
The mocking stares and whispered insults tore apart her fake pride piece by piece.

I caught sight of her in my peripheral vision and smirked to myself.
The ugly politics of high society weren’t something a nobody could handle.
I need her to understand.
She’s not worthy.
