Chapter 6
When I got to the coffee shop, Jake Miller’s parents were already waiting.
His mom wasn’t wearing makeup-her lips were cracked, her whole face looked older than it should.
His dad had a cold sore at the corner of his mouth.
It was obvious-they’d been losing sleep over Jake for a long time.
I slid into the booth across from them.
The second his mom saw me, her eyes lit up. She pulled out a debit card.
“Here. That’s three hundred thousand dollars.”
“I need you to do something for me.”
“You know how paranoid Jake is-always obsessing over nonsense lately.”
“So why don’t you go down to the hospital, pretend your daughter forgives him, and this money’s yours.”
“Just a few words out of your mouth.”
“Don’t be stupid and turn this down.”
That arrogant tone again.
They’d never learned empathy.
Never understood compassion.
No wonder they raised a monster like Jake Miller.
I lowered my eyes, lifted my coffee, and took a slow sip without answering.
Jake’s dad thought I was holding out for more.
He offered to add another hundred fifty thousand.
Still, I stayed quiet.
When they were about to keep bidding, I finally glanced at them with a thin smile,
“What if… what if Jake isn’t imagining things? What if it’s all real?”
Their faces went pale.
These rich types had plenty of skeletons in their closets, and nothing terrified them more than ghosts of the past coming back to life.
Jake’s mom slammed her hand on the table, pointing at me with a trembling finger.
She opened her mouth but couldn’t get a word out.

I set my cup down, didn’t bother with more words, grabbed my bag, and walked out.
Just outside the café, I spotted Emily.
She’d changed so much since a few months ago-no more fear in her eyes.
Now there was resolve.
With all the rumors swirling in town lately, she must’ve pieced together what Jake had done in the past-and what had happened to my daughter.
She stepped quietly to my side.
A moment later, she spoke in a low voice.
“No matter what… I’ll keep going with you.”
I stayed silent, then ruffled her hair gently.
Keep going.
Of course.
Jake’s broken leg, his unraveling mind, his parents’ panic-this was just the beginning.
At night, I’d disguise Emily and have her stand by Jake’s hospital bed.
He fainted several more times, terrified.
His mental state spiraled.
He stopped sleeping.
His body wasted away, his paranoia growing worse by the day.
His parents came looking for me a few more times.
I refused to meet them.
Finally, desperate, they dragged Jake off to some mountain retreat for a “spiritual blessing.”
When I heard, I laughed bitterly.
Prayers weren’t gonna save them.
Not with all the blood on their hands.
When they came back, Jake had another check-up and was admitted to the hospital again.
I found out his room number.
And I knew… it was time to end this.
