Chapter 37
“What do you think I should know?” Cynthia asked, a half–smile on her lips as she looked at Shirley.
Shirley felt uneasy inside, but her expression remained fierce. She despised Cynthia’s calm demeanor, as if she were inherently superior.
“Cynthia, right now, you’re just a dog we took in. You’d better understand your position. If a dog dares to bite its owner, it will definitely end up miserable.” Shirley’s voice dripped with warning and threat.
She wanted to tell Cynthia that no matter what she knew, if she dared to speak out, she would be doomed. However, Cynthia didn’t seem the least bit angry; she just chuckled. “Miserable? Is that a threat from you?”
Shirley was furious. “Cynthia, why are you so arrogant? You have nothing left now. I know that Filip doesn’t want you, either. Since he returned home, he would rather live with his mistress than look at you. Mom and Dad don’t want you, your husband disdains you, and you’ve lost your job. You’re no different from a stray dog. How dare you come here and act tough?”
Cynthia’s smile only deepened, and her face showed no hint of anger; her gaze was filled with disdain, as if she were looking at a clown. “I’ve heard that the more insecure someone is, the louder they bark. Of course, dogs do the same.”
Shirley was momentarily astonished, her eyes flaring with madness. “Cynthia, how dare you call me a dog? It seems I have to teach you a lesson today so you’ll know your place.”
Shirley raised her hand to slap Cynthia. But Cynthia caught her wrist. Her eyes flashed with the intent to kill.
However, when Cynthia glanced up and saw a figure just appearing at the top of the stairs, she suddenly tightened her grip on Shirley’s wrist and then let go.
Shirley’s wrist throbbed painfully, causing her to misjudge her movement. Instead of slapping Cynthia’s cheek, her hand struck Cynthia’s shoulder.
Cynthia took the chance to lean back, falling onto the stairs. “Shirley, what have I done to you? Why did you hit me as soon as I came back home?”
Cynthia instantly lost her earlier aura of confidence, clutching the railing of the stairs, appearing fragile, like a wilting flower Since Shirley had accused her of playing the victim, she decided to play the victim in front of her.
Shirley’s wrist felt like it was about to shatter, her head buzzing with pain. She had just felt Cynthia’s murderous intent, but now Cynthia appeared feeble. Nevertheless, Shirley didn’t care; she stepped forward, ready to kick Cynthia.
“Stop! Shirley, what are you doing?” As Shirley turned, she saw Justin and Selena standing at the top of the stairs, both looking down at them.
Shirley quickly realized her mistake. “Dad, Mom, she’s pretending! She was the one who wanted to hit me!”
Justin descended the stairs. “The truth is clear from what we saw above. I’ve said it many times–Cynthia will always be a part of the Jones family and your sister. You cannot bully your sister.”
Shirley was seething with anger inside. Cynthia was clearly faking it; she hadn’t even hit her, yet her wrist was throbbing with pain.
Selena stepped forward, taking Shirley’s hand. “Why are you scolding our daughter for an outsider? Hasn’t Shirley suffered enough because of her over the years?” With that, she took Shirley to the dining room.
As they left, Shirley turned to give Cynthia a glance, her eyes gleaming with smugness and provocation. She was glad that Selena was completely on her side.

Chapter 37
During dinner, Justin asked, “Cynthia, why didn’t Filip come with you?”
“He’s busy with work,” Cynthia replied vaguely.

The Jones family and the Yates family had always been very close. Justin likely already knew about her breakup with Filip, so she didn’t feel the need to explain.
“Busy with work? I heard that Filip has been living with his mistress since returning home and doesn’t even want to see you,” Shirley interjected.
Justin shot Shirley a glare before sighing. “You and Filip have loved each other since you were little. Right now, he’s just been led astray. Filip grew up in front of us and has always been devoted to you. I believe that as long as you put in a little more effort, he’ll come around eventually.”
Both families were well aware of the situation between Filip and Cynthia. Justin’s sudden invitation for her to dinner today was likely a request from the Yates family.
“Dad, I know my own situation,” Cynthia said.
Some things were better left unsaid, so Justin didn’t press further.
Seeing Justin fussing over Cynthia, Shirley interrupted their conversation. “Dad, Mom, I have an announcement to make.”
Everyone turned their attention to Shirley. “I’ve applied for the position of secretary to the CEO at BJ, and I’ve been accepted. I’ll start working there tomorrow.”
Justin was quite surprised. “You’ve been doing well in the design department. Why do you want to go to BJ?”
