[Zoren, Atlas, and Hugo’s group]
When their group neared the main port of their designated island, everyone was wary and tense. Even before reaching it, they had already turned off their engines and kept their weapons ready.
"No one’s there," said one of the soldiers in his boat, lifting the binoculars to his eyes again. "I see no one."
"Keep looking," another man uttered, flashing lights on the main port just in case. "This could be an ambush. Don’t lower your guard."
As for Hugo, he walked closer to the deck and raised his foot. He held his rifle across from him, watching the port for any enemies. But even when they reached it and anchored, no enemy showed up or opened fire.
It was empty.
Mark and Angel were the first to jump out of the boat, followed by their men, who spread out to check the vicinity for anything suspicious. Meanwhile, Hugo stayed close to Zoren and Atlas, ensuring that the two of them would land safely.
"Sir, there’s nothing," one of the men rushed back to Mark, who quickly approached his boss and Zoren’s brothers-in-law.
"The area is clear," Mark reported.
The other three exchanged glances, but before they could speak, they saw Angel running toward them. When the others saw people behind him, they raised their rifles at the newcomers.
"It’s alright!" Hugo yelled, raising a hand as he eyed the men following Angel. "I know them. They’re my comrades."
"Lieutenant!" The first soldier, who was closer to Angel, slowed down, stopping a few steps from Hugo. He didn’t even glance at the others, even when they raised their rifles.
He saluted Hugo. Hugo saluted back and then lowered his hand.
"What’s going on?" Hugo asked without beating around the bush.
"We’ve scouted the area and the island when we touched down. However, the entire place is guarded," reported the soldier. "We managed to take down a few, and our men are already blending in to secure a safe landing or docking."
Hugo nodded, his eyes scanning the people around them. "Did you find anyone waiting to ambush us here?"
"No, sir," the soldier answered quickly. "However, we did find some groups waiting to ambush us in other areas. Strangely enough, they all left the main port open."
"It could be another form of ambush?" Angel guessed, but Hugo shook his head.
"They left it open because no one’s going to use it," Atlas answered instead, his voice still monotonous, but his tone sharp. "Which only proves that the moles aren’t in our group."
"We sent three teams to our original docking place," Zoren remarked. "If no one’s here, then there’s going to be an ambush there."
After all, they had only changed their plans when they separated from Mint’s team. If there was an ambush there, then the moles had to be from Mint’s team. This shouldn’t be surprising, as before this all happened, Zoren had already cleansed the Phantom Circle.
It couldn’t be Penny’s men, but there were still chances. Shawn had managed to infiltrate the Prime Group.
"Let’s not worry about that for now," Atlas said. "We already told them where to meet us just in case."
Zoren nodded at him before the two of them set their eyes on Hugo. Angel and Mark, who were also with the group, turned their attention to Hugo.
Hugo drew a deep breath and nodded at them. "We’ll be assisting these two to a location safely," he ordered. "I’ll be riding with them. Keep in mind that a chase or battle might ensue during transport."
"Do what you must," he added solemnly.
But before they could start moving, the soldier who had approached them spoke. "Sir."
"What?"
