In another part of the island, gunfire echoed across the area, muffling even the loud screeches of tires grinding against the main road.
BOOM!
"What the—" Jonathan clasped his side, gripping the handle in the backseat, his teeth clenched as the vehicle he was in drifted.
When the vehicle regained stability, Jonathan slammed his side against the door. Another yelp escaped him, and he nearly bit his tongue as pain piled up in his body.
"The hell is—" Jonathan stopped, his eyes widening as he glanced back, catching sight of a chopper exploding not far from them. His breath hitched, and for a brief moment, the stabbing pain in his stomach was forgotten.
Another loud explosion followed as the burning chopper erupted once more. Despite their distance, Jonathan could almost feel the heat and impact of the crash. Deep lines appeared between his brows as he wondered who would be crazy enough to crash a chopper and block the entire road.
"Sir, group three was wiped out!" Suddenly, a voice crackled from the radio on the dashboard. "The Homeland Security made their landing, and—"
The report was cut short by the sounds of gunfire, followed by silence. Then, another voice came through the telecoms, reporting the same grim news: their group had been nearly wiped out and was now in hot pursuit.
Jonathan’s eyes remained wide as he clenched his hands tightly in his lap.
The driver briefly glanced at him through the rearview mirror, and the man in the passenger seat turned to look as well.
"We’ll take the other route to the mansion," the man in the passenger seat said, his tone grim. "Once you claim the code, our brothers won’t have died in vain."
Jonathan swallowed hard, glancing at the man in the passenger seat. He didn’t nod, nor did he respond. He just took a deep breath and winced, pressing a hand against his injury.
"Just keep moving," Jonathan finally spoke, his voice steady despite the pain. "We can’t let Zoren Pierson get there before us."
The men in the front nodded, their resolve hardening as they veered down another path. With the chopper blocking the road, they were forced to take a longer route. Still, they pressed on without looking back.
They had all expected the worst as Jonathan’s plan unfolded.
This was a fight for their freedom from the Zorken Family. And even in the annals of history, a fight for freedom always came at a heavy cost... or so they believed this war was it was all about.

At the same time, Mint stood on top of a smaller hill, unstrapping her parachute.
As she did, her eyes caught sight of several vehicles speeding down the main road.
She narrowed her eyes, pulling her earpiece from her collar and placing it in her ear. After pressing it, she spoke.
"I’ve spotted someone," she said, her voice sharp. "I don’t have a vehicle, but I’ll try to slow them down. I’m sending you my location."
Mint slung her rifle across her body and, following the cars with her sights, she pulled the trigger.
BANG!
One shot, and the last vehicle swerved as one of its tires deflated rapidly. Without hesitating, Mint shot again, aiming at the driver’s window. As expected, the bullet didn’t penetrate, so she kept firing, taking down at least three cars in quick succession.
However, she soon reached a dead end— a cliff.
