Chapter 42: ’Reject, Rejection, Rejected’

"Don’t act clueless," Scarlett said with a sneer. "Your tears now are completely different from the ones you used to shed when you were begging for His Majesty’s attention. Back then, you were desperate, pathetic. Now? You’re calculated. Whatever your reason, you’re lying to all of us, and it’s disgusting."

"Scarlett!" Alexandria gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "You’re accusing him of lying without proof! This is uncalled for."

"Uncalled for?" Scarlett turned to Alexandria with a scoff. "Are you so naive? If King Heinz is only giving him a task, like he claims, why has His Majesty been ignoring the rest of us entirely? And why," she paused for dramatic effect, her voice dripping with accusation, "does he keep summoning him at night? To His Majesty’s chambers?"

Murmurs broke out among the princesses. Camilla, who had been sitting quietly until now, nodded with a sly smile. "She’s right. It doesn’t add up. The King has never done this before, and yet Prince Florian expects us to believe this nonsense? It’s insulting, really."

Florian’s heart pounded as he struggled to maintain his composure. He forced his lips into a trembling smile, masking the panic bubbling beneath the surface. ’Damn it. I didn’t prepare for this. I underestimated her completely.’

Desperately, he glanced at Lucius, who had remained silent throughout the exchange. Florian hoped for a lifeline, an explanation, anything. But even Lucius seemed momentarily at a loss, his brows furrowed as though calculating his next move.

Scarlett caught the look and smirked triumphantly. "See?" she said, her voice cutting through the room like a whip. "He can’t explain himself anymore. Now, why do you think Prince Florian would lie?"

The weight of her words sank into the room, and Florian could feel the atmosphere shift against him. Bridget’s lips pressed into a tight line, anger flashing in her eyes—not at Scarlett, but at herself. It was clear she felt foolish for having believed him even for a moment.

Mira, ever the cool-headed observer, now stared at Florian with quiet disappointment, as though she’d expected better from him. Alexandria looked similarly disheartened, her brow furrowed in visible concern.

Athena, who hadn’t said a word the entire time, sat stiffly with her head down, refusing to meet Florian’s gaze.

But Camilla and Scarlett? They were basking in the moment. Camilla’s smirk mirrored Scarlett’s, though hers carried a subtle edge of malice, while Scarlett looked positively radiant with pride. This was her moment, her revenge for all the times Florian had outmaneuvered her.

Scarlett stood from her seat, pointing directly at him, her voice ringing with authority. "Tell us the truth, Florian. Why is His Majesty suddenly interested in you, hm? What did you do? Did you bewitch him?"

Florian froze. All eyes were on him now, waiting for his answer.

’I can’t believe this. She outsmarted me. Her. Of all people. I didn’t think she had it in her.’

The smirk on Scarlett’s face widened, her satisfaction evident as she crossed her arms and tilted her head. "What’s the matter, Prince Florian? Cat got your tongue?"

Florian opened his mouth to respond, but for once, the words wouldn’t come.

In the end, Florian said nothing. His silence spoke louder than any words ever could, and in that moment, it was as though Scarlett’s accusations had been carved into stone. The room hung heavy with unspoken judgments.

Every princess who had been on the verge of believing him now averted their gazes, their heads bowed in quiet disappointment. They didn’t need to voice their thoughts; their silence was enough. Florian could feel the rejection in the air, as sharp and suffocating as a dagger pressed against his throat.
